Zero Decibel Motorsports Turbo Heatshield

What:
Stainless steel heat shield to sit over the stock WRX turbo.

Why:
The turbo sits extremely close to the rear suspension brace. A couple heat shields made for Subaru applications didn't fit due to the close vertical quarters. The Zero dB heatshield bolts directly to the suspension brace and wraps down the sides of the turbo to reduce heat soak of the intercooler that sits above the turbo.

FAQ
Does this fit any turbos besides the stock TD04?
It's likely, but hasn't been tested. If you have a non stock turbo and want to try this out there is a discount available for the first person to try it on a specific turbo. All I ask is you perform a timely test fit and send me photos

Does it fit over a turbo blanket?
One member (CPlavan) has fitted one to his 818R with a turbo blanket. See below for photos.

How do I install the heatshield?
See below for photos. Slide the heatshield over the turbo with the suspension brace installed making sure it clears the wastegate arm. Attach the bracket and hold the heatshield assembly where you want it. Mark the location of the front and rear mounting hole on the brace. Remove the bracket, drill, and install rivnuts. Replace the bracket and insert screws into the two new rivnuts. Ensure all screws are tight.

Remove mounting bracket install from front of car. You might need to flex the shield to get it to fit smoothly. It will spring back on it's own as it is quite stout.

Slide the shield back until the front mounting tab touches the cross brace. Line it up so that the wastegate arm has plenty of clearance.

Attach the separate mounting bracket and mark all three holes, unbolt the bracket, and pull the heatshileld back out through the front. Drill and insert a 1/4-20 rivnut. The front one is difficult to do with the brace in place. I recommend unbolting one side of the brace, swinging it up, and having more room to easily drill and install the rivnut.

After the rivnuts are installed slide the shield back into place, loosely bolt the bracket to the brace, then bolt the bracket to the shield loosely. Install the front bolt and then tighten everything. In most cases the integrated star washer holds the nuts in place during tightening with light finger pressure. A flat wrench will work well in case the nut spins.

Rear view of heatshield coverage. You can see in this image how close the turbo is to the cross brace. For this reason I recommend not using stock engine mounts as they rock quite readily under heavy engine loads and the turbo is likely to bang the brace and cause damage.

Why would you need a heat shield if you're using a properly sized turbo blanket?

It should provide an incremental benefit to keep the intercooler cool. I believe someone did an extensive write up on NASIOC including photographs with a thermal camera to analyze the benefit of the PTP turbo blanket with and without a heat shield (as well as without the turbo blanket and using only the heat shield).

This also covers the flange between the turbo and downpipe/exhaust and covers a portion of the exhaust as well. The flange of the turbo is just about flush with the cross brace. The heat shield extends a little over 3" past that. A blanket typically only covers the exhaust housing and leaves the exhaust exposed. A blanket can do more than a heatshield by itself, but together they both do better than either one separately.

From what I remember reading about heat shield vs blanket in general that blankets are better, but a good blanket usually costs more (vs a cheaper turbo wrap), they may wear out and need periodic replacement (several year intervals), but both is best.

Pete, what type of blanket did you use? Dan, I bought a PTP Turbo Blanket that Craig said to buy in Post #9 above. It has 4 steel posts and comes with wire to wrap around the posts to tie it in place. Considering the weather reports I have seen recently, I think you need this blanket to keep your turbo warm in the garage! Here in the AZ desert we all love seeing photos of snow, icy roads, frozen gutters, frostbitten fingers, jumper cables and cars in ditches. :D
