How far into the build do you need the engine, trans and rear end?

Engine and trans can wait until quite late---heck you could build, plumb, wire, paint and upholster the car without them if you wish. Obviously you'll need the rearend to make the car a roller. I always do all of the aluminum panels (except for driver's side footbox top and side), plumbing and electrical before dropping the engine & trans in.

E Like Jeff said, the engine and trans can wait until the end of the build if you wish. The rear end will be required to make it a roller and the rear brake lines.

If you're buying a crate, be careful that the warranty doesn't expire during your build.
Although, having the engine on the stand in your garage is GREAT MOTIVATION for getting to first start and go-kart! :D

You need to know whether you will run carb or efi so you know how to run fuel lines and whether you need a return line to the tank or not. Also efi has a lot more complicated wire harness so laying out it's location is important. Need to know what type brakes the rear will have so you can run the lines. I guess you don't need to have the stuff, you just need to know in some detail what it will be.
