View Full Version : Who fitted a Walbro?

Someone, at least one person, fitted a Walbro 255 and it went in the gas tank like a condom on... right. So... I am trying to find who it was?
Cuz my VW pump is actually too large for the gas tank's hole, I would like to know how the Walbro fits and if possible how great it pulls fuel in the injectors for 400+hp. As far as I know, the Walbro 255 is more than enough for that task.

I did. Its about the same size as stock, I think. Hard to get it because of the hose clamp.

Hard to get it? You mean hard to buy? I don't think that's what you mean cuz you mention the clamp.
Which part # you got? 340, 341, 342...?

I used a Walbro 255 looked the same size as stock tight fit but like Craig said with the clamp in the right spot it goes in

I installed a Walbro 255; however I lost the FFR fuel pump bracket; I cut my own out of spare aluminum; so my angle was a bit off from the start.
It took me about 1/2 an hour to work the fuel pump into the FFR tank and make sure the pickup sock was correctly in the pan and get the fuel pump hanger lined up straight. I spent a lot of time with a small flashlight making sure everything looked happy. Getting the assembly into the tank wasn't that hard, but with the hose clamp the clearance was tight.

Ok I see. I will order one. As far as I know these pumps have a great reputation and they seem to be around 40-50 bucks.
Did you guys buy the pump only or a kit with the small filter bag, plastic connector, etc.?
Besides I can't see the difference between the 3 Walbro GSS340, 341, 342. http://walbrofuelpumps.com/
Anyone know which one you got?

Ok I know the difference between the 340, 341 and 342. It's the inlet and/or oulet size.
I don't have the FFR hose that came with the kit to measure its size, if anyone has it handy, what size hose is it?
Otherwise I'll have to wait Saturday and check.

The Subaru bump (ffr uses the pump from donor) outlet is 5/16"

Hey great! That's the 341. The most common is apparently the 342, which is 1/3", very slightly bigger. I'll order the 341.
Tnx Bob!

I used a GSS342, it has 255 liter capacity. Its what I was told was the right one, but I haven't started it up yet, and I'm less than 300hp.
Like Mechie3 said it was difficult to get into the tank and I had to switch for a hose clamp with a smaller tightening bolt.
The FFR mechanism has enough flexibility to get the sock in an oriented right, but make sure you figure it out before hand. I had to take it out and had alot of difficulty getting it out again.

Yeah well after looking at the outlet sizes, all 3 are within 1/3rd of a 1/16 inch! The 340 has 8mm, which is between 5/16 and 1/3. 1/3 is 5.3/16. That is confusing, which one to get... I guess it won't matter. Another PITA part to install, but I know after that it's gonna work. :) And no mods to anything.

Frank, I also installed a 255 pump. It was a tight fit (never tried stock so I don't know if that's tighter), but it can definitely go in there. I put my phone camera through the level sensor hole with the light on to see if it was sitting nicely (since I couldn't really see it with the naked eye) and it seems to be.

Good idea Frank. I'll have to remove my fuel sender as it's already in.
I'll check on the DW200, rtz, in case I prefer that one.

Got my pump. Is there something wrong, the size of it is about 1/3 of my old VW pump. Freakin small!!
Overall Length (tip to tip): 5"
Length of Pump Body Metal Case: 3 1/8"
Pump Body Diameter: 1 1/2"
Is your Walbro about the same?

Ok tnx Bob, judging by the pic they are exactly the same, except mine has a mirror finish so that I guess people can see the bling bling inside the gas tank. hahahaha :D
Well looks like my fuel pump knowledge stopped in 1992 as these little things changed a lot since...

I know the GSS342 drops right in.

According to what I've seen, the GSS340, 341 and 342 are the same size, just the outlet size what varies a little. I have a 341.

DW300 went in fairly easily, I posted some fuel tank tips on my build thread, and another thread somewhere.
