Has anyone had luck in using header heat wrap in an attempt to keep the heat out of the foot boxes?

That's a loaded question - you'll get many responses, with the opposite ends of the spectrum being "yes, it's great" to "no, it'll rust out the pipes."
That said, I applied header wrap to the lower portion of the pipes (where all four come together) and then topped that with some heat shields that I made that protect the top and rear (towards the footboxes). If you do a search on exhaust heat shields you should find info on those.

Has to be a step in the right direction; I'm thinking ceramic coating would be better. Heat-shielding the footboxes is the optimum solution IMO.

Heat and sound insulation products -- there are a number of choices -- on the cockpit sheet metal including the foot boxes has proven to be very effective. Just not sure why it's necessary to take a chance with the header wrap. I personally have no experience with it, but others have reported condensation and corrosion issues. Why chance it? No need to reinvent the wheel here IMO.
I have used Lizard Skin heat and sound insulation products on the inside of the cockpit and trunk sheet metal on both of my builds. The Mk3 has been on the road for 3+ years and I can tell you there are no issues with foot box heat. None. Did the Mk4 the same way and expect it to be the same when it's on the road probably next season. Other products are just as effective.
Don't underestimate the importance of heat and sound dampening and for that covering the complete cockpit aluminum should give greater benefit than only heat shielding the headers with the possible consequences.

I have mine wrapped with the stuff made from lava rock. It really makes a difference - in a good way. It doesn;t seem to be vert durable, though. Even though the instructions say not to spray it, I think I will next time. As for rust, I don't think it's that big of a deal.

YES.. YES... YES
Two years ago I had the headers sand blasted (car built in 202) and then treated them with a coating of VHT Header Paint followed by the DEI titanium wrap. The wrap covers the headers, j-pipe and the side pipes as they come out of the opening. Looks cool and helps to keep it cool. As you can tell my vote is YES and that's a wrap...
