I am impressed with the quality of the gelcoat finish and the parts. I wasn't planning on paint and the finish won't take much polishing to make it shine.
The engine will be basically stock other than, Header, Twin scroll, pocket port, light flywheel, STi injectors, Cusco LSD my target is 300whp.
Yes the fun has begun, got the inventory done yesterday and inspected all the body parts, I will be able to spend a few hours a night during the week but weekends are out until November. So it will be a slow start.

I hate it when work and honey do's gets in the way of project. I have been able to get some time in and make some progress. I will get the diff installed in the trans this week and get the engine ready to set in. I wire will have my harness soon and need to order my brakes.
I hoping to have it done by May-June but reality is this fall, getting busy at work. Oh well I am having a blast and don't want to rush.

Isn't it just great building it? The process!
I'm in no rush. I'll be happy if I have a car to test out this fall.
What brakes are you ordering? My custom Stoptech Trophys will be here (hopefully) this week.

I will be using AP brakes.
I have adjusted my thinking on all that I planned to do and what I am going to do. I want to get the car running this year and can't blow up my budget much more than I have and stay married.

Hey Mitch, how long is the steering column that you used. You did a custom mount? Do you have it coupled to an oem u-joint and an oem steering rack? I'm thinking about fitting a custom column. Also, if you know what the lower shaft diameter and splines/dd coupling is It'd be useful for me as well.
Thanks,

I cut off 3.5" off the bottom of the the OE shaft, turned it down an inch to .550 pressed it in to the .750 4130 shaft and welded it to the shaft. Right now I am using the OE coupler and U joints and Subaru rack.
I am using a steering shaft mount from A&A, 3/4 rod end and flange mount 3/4 bearing bolted to the firewall. My original plan was to drill the FFR steering mount for the rod end but the shaft/steering wheel was going to be too high.
The shaft is currently 3' I still have to cut the shaft and weld on the steering wheel quick release. Now that I have the seat mounts done bolting in the seat and fitting the wheel is next.
Speedy, I have the shaft installed now, to the OE coupler the total length is 30". Now if you plan to do the same thing install your pedals and seat and cut the shaft to fit you.

No, I've never had my pictures rotated... that's odd.
Mitch, I have lots of questions.:p
Why did you choose the AIM MXL over the others? I'm struggling with making a decision.
Whose steering wheel quick release is that?
What size AP brakes will you get? I went with ST-40 calipers and slotted 328x28mm (12.9") rotors. Thx.

I have worked with both Mike's at AIM Sport for sometime and really familiar to the products and Data system and have provided great support. At PRI looked at a number of dashes but went back to what I know and the MXL mates up well with the OE ECU.
The Quick release is a Longacre 56605 I bought it from Summit Racing $69.95
I am working with Essex Parts on the brakes (haven't bought them yet but great guys to work with) I plan to use the CP8350 Caliper and 299mm X 35mm floating rotor/hat front and rear. It is also 10 lb lighter than the OE brakes per corner. They also have a 325mm X 35mm Rotor/Caliper set up (5 lb lighter than stock per corner) but believe the 299mm rotors/Caliper combo will work well on a 2000-2050 car with driver (my goal).

These are the nose radiator exhaust vents for a Spec Racer Ford, will see if their is the room for them to fit once the hood is fit. I have laid them on the bottom side of the hood and the shape seems good and with a little tweak will look good and be functional. If these don't work out I have a plan B that I am confident will work.

After test fitting and making the necessary adjustments and parts for the VF37 turbo and JDM header. (Thanks Wayne recommendation the JDM header is a nice header) All the vacuum and water lines replaced or deleted. Took the day off yesterday and filled the hole in the engine bay.
Unless I am missing something the heater hose inlet and out let are about 12" apart on my 04 engine the U hose that FFR sends for the heater bypass must be for a later engine?

STiPWRD
04-30-2015, 09:55 AM
Mitch, some of the Subaru engines (not sure which exactly) came with a different upper coolant cross-over pipe that places the heater inlet/outlet close to each other (this is the setup the FFR hose was intended for). You can either replace this pipe or run a longer coolant hose. I ended up replacing the pipe to use the shorter FFR hose since you get more above the trans where I'm planning to run AWIC piping from the turbo.

Looks like with a little work I can make the front Radial mount adaptor work on the rear. I have used AP Brakes on a number of my cars, the quality and fit has always been impressive. Plus the bonus is I am saving 9lbs a corner over the OE calipers and rotors.
I have also found that the rotors last much longer than others. (I don't have any experience with Wilwoods)

05-19-2015, 12:25 PM
What size are those? Do they make an adapter for STi rears? If the four backing plate holes are the same (STi and WRX) I have STi backing plates that I modified so they are clocked for the caliper to be at the front, or 9 o'clock position. Nothing else is on the plate. I removed the other, thinner plate for the emergency brake, etc. They are also notched so that they slip on and they just use the most important three bolt holes. Can post pictures. Sell cheap. It turns out my Stoptechs came with their own custom aluminum bracket that replaces everything. Stoptech's bracket is just for racing.
Mitch Wright
05-19-2015, 01:25 PM
I like the idea of the Stoptech bracket, I actually have thought of machining up like what you have. I wonder if the radial mount bolt spacing and rotor off set could be the same. Could I ask you to take a few measurement on what you have. I am using 299mm rotors, I don't have the hat offset handy but can do some measuring.
I have eliminated all but the backing plate as well.
Thanks,
Mitch

I'll do that measuring in the morning. I had no idea that Stoptech had a racing only bracket for the rear of a Subaru... My StopTech Trophy Race rears (and fronts) are 12.9 inch diameter or 328mm x 28mm wide rotors.

I don't know how you translate that stock backing plate piece to my Stoptech piece and how it might adapt to your AP Racing calipers. I assume yours slide over studs like my Stoptechs do. The offset of those holes and the stud diameter could vary and my bracket might push your calipers too far out on the rotor.
I guess you've seen the pictures of my brackets in place (http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?12395-818R-quot-Glynman-Style-quot&p=190883&viewfull=1#post190883)? They might make a smaller bracket for their 282x25mm rotors but I don't see a closer match.
My plates I thought I was going to use.

I have done the same thing to my backing plates other than notch it which is a great idea. I do like the rear Race mount you got from Stoptech that is exactly what I envisioned having to make. It will be interesting to see if it will work with my AP calipers and rotors.
Mitch Wright
05-31-2015, 10:02 AM
Scargo,
The stars didn't align, the radial mount spacing on my AP calipers is 6" center to center. But spending a little time yesterday mocking up the rear caliper mount looks to be a easy mod. I can make a plate that bolts up like the Stoptech mount then bolt up the AP front mount to it. I will pick up some aluminum plate next week and get to work.

Well I made the decision a while ago to go with a dry sump for my R, I am ready to place the order this week. I am going with the Element system, I believe this should be the last big expenditure for a while.
I am getting close to my first start and will do that with the wet sump then switch it over before I install the body.
It still looks like I will come in at a little over $30K all in running a stock 2.0L with a VF37 twinscroll and pocket port on the heads. So not too far from my original budget.
On to finishing up the rear caliper mounts and getting it to make noise.

Not doing much to engine and doing the work myself helped other than the wiring harness. Selling off donor parts paid for the brakes and a few other things. A lot of things I had from other projects. Steering wheel, New Seat Belts, some of the 5/8 rod ends, some of the swedged tubes for the rear suspension, AN fittings and hose, spacers and reasonably stocked fastener bin, using a STi Air to Air intercooler. Not being in a big hurry and taking time to hunt for deal on what I wanted and calling in a favors for deals from friends in the industry helped a ton.
Now if was to start including that stuff and materials I had the number would be higher, it makes me feel better not to.
And to be fair the car is not a driver yet so I am sure I have forgotten a few things that have not made the list.

Drove the car for the first time today, did 3 laps around the neighborhood. She feels like she wants to go, 38 degrees temps it will spin the old tires I have on it at will in 3rd. It also didn't take much to lock up the fronts on the brakes.
When I get back in town I will take the car out to the track for some more shake down miles before the body starts to go on.
My scales decided to go on the fritz, they wouldn't zero out. So knowing what it weighs will have to wait for the scales to come back from repairs.

Great job Mitch,
Getting the front to lock up is the easy part.
This was my go kart weights with about 5 gallons in the front tank..

I have been shooting for 1500lbs as a gokart, or a little less. I think I have done a lot of work to eliminate some weight, the scales will tell.
I have a lot of bias to front right now if the weather is agrreable next weekend I will take the car to the track and play around on the skid pad then log some easy miles on the track.
Not sure how much help I can be at this point but I look forward to you guys coming down to play.

Put 30 miles on the go kart today at the track. I few minor issues, 2 of my vacuum caps came off started running badly. Rear calipers and brake hose at the banjo bolt were seeping just little. Other than those minor things the car ran well, tracks straight, brakes straight, got the brake bias close.
Something that needs attention is the rear steer/rear bump steer (haven't bump steered the car yet) but the rear feels nervous.
Other than alignment and spending some time on the bump steer I need to get a set of tires on the car that are not from the stone age.
Anyway a great day now spend some more time on the basic set up and start on the body.
I will post a video clip shortly.

Great to hear indeed! Go kart stages were a lot of fun and good to work out the kinks before the big track.
I had a lot of issues with blowing off vacuum lines. I ended up buying small hose clamps for all of them. Though some people swear by hair spray and a lighter to seal it.

Congrats! Very good to hear you are off to a promising start. Looking forward to more track stories.
I buy silicone vac caps online. They last forever and work great. Also use spring hose-clamps on them (order from ebay or Amazon).
I've heard others talk about what you are describing in the rear and in their cases, it ended up being the upper trailing arm adjustment (the one that controls the twist of the spindle). If you haven't already, you need to adjust it so the two lower lateral links are parallel. Also, rear toe will affect back end stability too, of course.

Hi Mitch,Michael drove the 818s to high school this morning. 28F this morning when he left. The roads where wet and patched of ice. We switched from235, 255 r compound to 225 all seasons tires. He said the car handling was very loose.
He might be the first on to get an 818 stuck. His parking space had a lot of ice. He had trouble getting out of it this afternoon.
I don't how much handling value you get from a cold track testing.

I was driving very tamely on tires that are old, I am sure the 50* track temp and 4 hockey pucks has a lot to do with the nervousness.

Yesterday wasn't a track test, it was a shake down. I wanted to get some miles on the car, my goal was to find issues/problems to be able to correct them prior to the installing the body. Which I did, in all it was a successful day. Just taking it easy and really not trying the car had no problem seeing 120mph (couldn't help myself)according to the AIM GPS.

All of our hours were in the rear of the car, closing up the gap under the roll cage, closing the gap at the top rear of the door, and making the rear trunk and deck lid one piece that lifts straight up and off the car. The front is a dream compared, only fitting the lights kinda sucks. We have another after market set on the way, that have more adjustment.

It was a pain to do headlight fitment. I hope you used Bob's method. I also mounted the front bottom of the bumper to the radiator mounting (black angled piece provided by FFR) with angled brackets instead of directly there (I don't even know if they recommend any mounting or not), but I recommend you secure it somehow. Mine moved around a lot on track without it and it was a little concerning structurally. I'm sure a splitter would help stiffen it up
Mitch Wright
01-24-2016, 11:17 PM
I did used Bob's method to get started which is really helpful. I was not concerned with being able to adjust the lights which allowed some freedom. I made aluminum mounts for the front end , I don't recall seeing the FFR brackets.

My priority was the fit and very small even gaps and being able to adjust the lights was at the bottom of my list. Hi Tony, Yes the wing mount has vertical support from the back chassis right next to the trans mount. I welded on 2 3/8 clevises the chassis and 2 clevises on the bottom of the wing mount. I am using swedged R&L hand threaded aluminum tubes with 3/8 rod ends for the struts, ordered tubes today from Speedway. I now have the rear fascia removed and will take a picture with the struts installed when they arrive. The clevises and other tabs I buy from A&A Manufacturing, great resource if you haven't used them.
I used 1" .049 Chromalloy tubing for the wing mount frame, I am happy with how light it is.

Hi Tony,
Thanks it is fun watching the list shrink.
Not sure I understand your question.
I used nut plates and 10/32's to hold the windshield to the fiberglass 2 10/32's up front to the chassis. 6 10/32's and nut plates hold the front of the dash to the fiberglass with 4 10/32's under the back of the dash.
Not sure if I answered the question or added confusion.

What's the Saker Sportscars baffle look like? How is it better than the OEM or Killer B baffle?
Mitch Wright
05-03-2016, 09:01 AM
It sits about 1/2" below the frame rail on my car, my JDM header is about the same. Like the Cosworth baffle the Saker baffle sandwiches between the block and pan but a simpler device compared to the Cosworth piece. The idea is to not allow the oil climb the side of the pan and fill the heads in high G corners. Emailing a few Saker owners and talking to the folks at Saker reports have been good, the Saker is capable of 1.7g + I am told. Anyway worth a try.
53515
I tried to buy one from Saker but no luck so I am making a few myself and will have it on track soon. I am logging oil pressure and temp and looking forward to seeing if the results.
As I mentioned Tony I believe is using or planning to use the Cosworth pan and baffle set up so we should be able to compare notes.

Looks good Mitch.
FFR did similar ducting on the first blue & white car.
What to you think of using little cables to hold the splitter instead of rods?
Bob
Struts are preferable since you can extend them to "push" the splitter down. It angles up without mods.
Mitch Wright
06-24-2016, 04:33 PM
Thanks Bob, I have been in contact with Jim at FFR the TMIC has been one of the many discussions. He has said they have done something similar on the Blue car with good results. He has also mentioned a few other areas that could possibly improve TMIC flow. Before I go exploring I want to finish off the 10 minute jobs (3-6 hours each) punch list and get the car to the track and put on some miles.
Chad is correct Struts are preferable, I have my splitter extended out to 4" from std 2" I think it need some help to stiffen it up. I also have splitter mounted to my radiator ducting.
I made my struts and mounts but you can buy them from APR.

Took the day off yesterday and finally stopped procrastanating and tackled ducting for the TMIC one of the last big 10 minute jobs and the front splitter struts. The punch list is getting shorter.
Heading in a similar direction but using the side sail vents with internal scoops to capture air and run it through brake duct tubing to the TMIC, I still believe that TMIC will work and save weight.

Waiting on new injectors and it is kind of nice to have a deadline now due Dyno/tune time that I have scheduled in a few weeks.565775657856579

Hey Mitch,
I like the splitter braces and the after radiator plenum. Are you going to do anything with the hood vents?
If all goes well with our engine swap. We will see you Saturday.
The heat is very much limiting our garage time. Right now its 94 and the humidity makes it feel like 104F.

The roll-bar in these is so low, if you can see over the dash your head is probably too high.
I like the radiator ducting. I need to do something like that too one day. So many things on the punch list though.

I will have to see when I get it back on track with the dash and body on it. When I go karted my sight line was just at or a little above the front roll hoop. With the body and dash installed it has changed the view. Not worried thats what testing is for and with the broom stick test I have at least 3" if not more so I have room to raise the seat if needed.
Hindsight

You are lucky. I did the broomstick test yesterday in prep for my upcoming track day and with a helmet on, I have to deliberately slump to pass the broomstick test, and when I do, I only clear it by half an inch or so at most. I may have to do what Bob did and hack the S rollbar out, then fabricate something taller that looks more like the R version.
Do you have a track day planned yet?

5 things left on the punch list, took the afternoon off yesterday, installed my new injectors, installed the oil temp sender and tidied up wiring loom tie down.
Plan to finish this weekend: final alignment/Scale, install tune that will allow me to shake the car down before dyno session.
Dyno session Date TBD
Final Install front splitter, diffuser, under engine belly pan after dyno session.
The Project will be 2 years on August 14th, I didn't really get starting on the build until November 2014 but I am really happy with the end result.

Had a bit of an issue marrying the Access port to the ECU, it took a few days to figure out with the help of John and Corbin at Fathouse Fabrication, the guys at Cobb Tuning and Brian at I wire. The culprit was my AIM Dash, good news is guys much sharper than I figured it out and found a simple work around, and happy to report everything works and got the car tuned. I am really please with how my stocker EJ205 (with a JDM Header and VF37 Turbo) runs.
I asked Corbin for 2 maps one for NASA and one to play with just because. The low boost map is 14lb 257.71hp, 227.80 torque, the high boost is 17lb 283.77 hp, 257.57 torque.

Can you expand on the AIM dash - ECU- AP problem? Thanks.
If it's the same issue that I had, you cannot have the AIM OBDII adapter and the Cobb AP connected to the ECU at the same time. They will intermittently connect to both. On mine, added a simple toggle switch to the wire going to the ECU. Normal mode was connected to the AIM dash. When I needed to flash or do anything with the AP, just flip the toggle.
Mitch Wright
08-25-2016, 08:01 AM
Jerome, is correct, the AIM would interfere with trying to flash the ECU. I do have a switch for the AIM that was installed by Iwire. For some reason even with the dash off we had the problem. Currently investigating, disconnect the K line wire and ran it directly to the ECU and we were golden.

Well my 818R has been let out of shop once again, this time fully clothed. It is a different and enjoyable car to drive with the front and rear bump steer dialed in and sending the time to get the alignment to the numbers I wanted to start with. Along with the tune on the engine this car has come alive, BIG SMILE. Going out again on my lunch hour tomorrow and burn a few more laps and look at the logs, plan to run a few sessions with 10/10th Saturday and Sunday and hope to tune on the chassis some. If I can find our goPro I will share a few laps.

Will do Tony, plan to run the car again later today a bit more aggressively than yesterday and down load the data.
Current baseline alignment specs on the car:
Front
.062 total toe in
+6* caster
-2.6 camber
3.5" ride height
Bump steer (from memory) from static ride height 1" drupe 2" compression .010 max change.
350lb front springs
Dampeners set on softest setting
Rear:
-3* camber
.1875 total toe in
3.75 rear ride height
Bump steer from static ride height 1" drupe 2" compression .015 max change.
500lb rear springs
dampeners on softest setting.
Tires BFG R1S
The car is comfortable to drive so for me it is a good place to start. I am getting some tire rub on the RF so far not a big concern.

Got in 2 sessions short shakedown sessions Friday then back to the shop to address the front fender tire rub (running 235/40X17 BFG R1S fronts). Was able to play with both fenders and gained a 1/2" of additional clearance on both fenders. Got in 3 sessions Sunday and happy to report the car feels really good and have a great starting point to tune on the chassis.
I did park the car due to loss of clutch hydraulics, found that slave actuating rod/piston was lying between the salve and bellhouse. I am going to look first to see if I need to add a pedal stop to limit the travel of the Wilwood clutch pedal.
Any additional ideas on the cause I would love to hear them. I have ordered a new slave so hope to have the car back out late in the week.

Are you running without heating issues and are you happy with the top-mount intercooler?
Mitch Wright
11-19-2016, 05:54 PM
Thanks Glyn, I like the red too. I think it will pop with a little more shine once I get a chance to buff the gelcoat. Yes so far with the limited on track testing (5 sessions) I have done the TMIC seems to be doing the job. I just took off the intercooler to weld in a bung to log temp the after the IC. No heat issues at all water temp has not been hotter than 180* on track and got the oil temp sender working and haven't seen over 220 I am only running the OEM heat exchanger 5 on track sessions so far. I am also running a wet sump, so far the oil pressure logs look really good but with only limited laps (1.5 G so far) and know the car has a lot more in it. SO data will tell as the speed comes up.
Had a clutch issue last time out, got the trans out today and as suspected the TO bearing has come apart. I believe I broke my own rule and used an aftermarket release bearing.
Also had Wayne send me a Radium fuel catch can for my cell, so I will put that in while waiting for the TO bearing. We have 2 long fast RH corners at NCM and could get a fuel bobble/starvation with 4 gals in the cell.
Have a long list of things to test when I get the car back together, just added rebound to the shocks. Then start playing with spring rates (currently 300Frt, 500Rear) have 350-450# and 550-600# to try.
Anyway I am having fun.

Got a chance to get some work done on my car with the hope of getting out and enjoying the 70+ weather. Well got carried away on taking care of some things to improve serviceability and stuff I just wasn't 100% happy with. I was also lucky enough to have Wayne stop by on his way to PRI to look the car over and make some suggestions and comments.
Anyway didn't get out to burn some laps but did move, change or improve a number of items. Like moving my data port to make it easier to get to, replace the leaking cheap plastic coolant recovery tank with a Canton tank (Something I cheeped out on while building), rethinking the front and rear belly pan mounts for ease of service and reroute some of my Iwire engine harness. Never did make it out on track yesterday but I have been thinking about this stuff for a while and feels great to get them done.

So if you use the side vents with any tubing for cooling then you have to shield the hose somehow so either fender liner or hose liner as the Dragonfly team was eating up hoses because of the tires and crap that comes off it. I went with the fender liner, need to invent a better finder liner someday
