I read where Shelby installed t10 transmissions in the early (perhaps all of them?) 289 Cobras but tried to search "t10" on this site and nothing came up. Has anyone built one of these kits and put a t10 in the car?

I have a '67 Fairlane 289 car that I am turning into a 427 tribute car and I will have the drive train left over. Then I also have a good Ford application Borg Warner T10, and could pair it with the engine out of the Fairlane to put in a FFR car.

You would be talking about the top loader. I got mine from a '67 289 Mustang, close ratio and a lot of fun to drive. Keep in mind that with a 1:1 fourth gear you'll be spending a lot of time at or above 3,000 revs.

No I'm talking about the Borg Warner t-10 4 speed which is a completely different transmission than the top loader.

This is where I read that the t-10 is what Shelby installed in the early 289 Cobras. T-10s were also installed in Falcons and big block Galaxies before top loaders entered into the mix.

Early cars in fact did have the T-10. The toploader was meant to replace it and was introduced in 1964. I would think it should fit.

I don't have specific T10 knowledge but think it will work fine. One advantage is, since it's a 4 speed, I assume it's shorter than an T5 so that is good regarding a longer driveshaft length. The only issue I can think of is the shifter location. You might need to cut out and relocate one of the diagonal tubes on the top of the tunnel but that is a common mod so no problem.

T10s came/come with two lengths of tail housings and mine has the short one. From what I read and as is stated above the toploader didn't come into being until 1964, so Shelby had to use something else on cars built before it became available and T10s were about it. I will look and see if I can find pictures of one of the earliest Cobras with a 260 in it and see where the shifter comes up through the trans tunnel.

I was just wondering if anyone had actually put a t10 in an FFR kit.

The caption says this is a picture of a '62 260 Cobra and looking at the trans tunnel the stick does appear to be coming up closer to the driver than you see on '65> cars which would have had top loaders.

I had a T10 in my Dax Cobra replica (UK kit). I regretted it! Revs were up in fouth gear and it became tiring on the ears.
