I had a bellmouth off of catless downpipe laying around. It was cut off so I could weld on a twinscroll bellmouth and use on a different vehicle. I bought a 60 degree 3" 304SS mandrel bend for $30, a stainless O2 bung for $3.75, and a stainless muffler for $48. The muffler is a little too boy racer for me, but I wanted something dirt cheap until I decide to replace the turbo with something bigger. I won't be sticking with a stock location Subaru turbo.

I'll try to get some driving videos tonight, but I thought the sound was pretty good. In this video the car is idling around 1500 RPM and only revving to 4000 RPM since the motor wasn't very warm.

Thanks for posting, Aero. Since I need a cat and/or muffler I knew there must be a better solution than the $400 straight pipe.

Definitely. $400 for a straight pipe is way too much in my opinion. If you needed to buy a brand new cheap downpipe to hack off the bellmouth you're still only talking $150-200. I wish I could source the cast bellmouth that invidia uses. Obviously access to a welder is key to do this. Here are the parts I purchased.

Great job! Nice solution & tone.

I agree the $400 straight pipe is pretty laughable, plus it sounds like crap!

Check my thread, you can get in a cut off bell mouth, a flowmaster high flow 3 inch cat and a muffler for much less

Bell mouth down pipe $80.00
cat $68.49
muffler $43.90

All items are stainless, I chose a non boy racer muffler but it would work as well. $200 plus some welding...

I ordered a brand new SS bellmouth for my stock TD04 from Kinugawa turbo for $125. Got the P/N on here; I bet they have a run on them, it's perfect for building an 818 exhaust:

I agree, there's really no need to spend a lot on the exhaust when you can do your own for so much less. I'll get a nice SS muffler (thinking a short Flowmaster) for under $100, and won't need a cat.

Funny! no cat, no muffler, no inspection sticker

Cat and muffler are high flow, you can look straight through the muffler, all 3 inch after the turbo should sound very nice. It didn't sound bad with the stock catted downpipe and the FFR adapter but I wanted to run a stage 2 tune

Nice tone yes for the price great job!
Is that blue smoke?

That smoke is from the $48 muffler burning off oil and other garbage inside it.

Here is one more video demonstrating the exhaust tone and shooting some flames. I'm still running on a MAF based tune with a VTA blow off valve. This makes an overly rich condition between shifts, allowing for ignition.

I ran in to my neighbor while I was out driving so we did a quick comparison of the 818S to a BMW 335i

Between this video and the early FFR ones I'm thinking stock engine and tranny mounts are too soft. Might have to add the dogbone to the transaxle too!

Yep, that's what 230 whp does to stock engine/trans mounts.

Aero, you have a stock WRX in?
You seemed to be able to smoke that 335 pretty good with only 230whp. :)

It should smoke it stock.... power to weight ratio is around two points lower for a stock 818 vs the 335i

I have a stock '06 WRX drivetrain, but I flashed a mild 93 octane tune to compensate for the 3" catless exhaust. The airboy dyno came out with 230 peak wheel horsepower. The tune would probably make similar all wheel horsepower numbers in a WRX. I don't have a dyno graph of it on any of my work PCs.

I'm running 580 tread wear all season tires at the moment because they came on the rims. I can spin the rears easily in 2nd gear on dry or damp pavement. I can spin them in 3rd gear on damp pavement.

400 WHP and 500 WTQ on E85 is what I would like to shoot for with an EFR7163 turbo and custom header/exhaust.

My Z, at around 10lbs/hp, can just just barely walk away from a stock 335i (tuned, those motors are a beast; my wife has a 135i but says she doesn't need any more power!). I'd say you at least jogged, if not ran, away from him in 2nd. ;)

Thanks for sharing, I also have a stock 06 WRX motor, so it's nice to see what it can do!

And summer tires, I guess. :)

My good friend has a manual 335i and one of my employees has a manual 135i, both stock except for a JB4. With a few gallons of E85 mixed in to the tank of 93 and the autotune feature turned on, both cars are very stout. My neighbor won't bite the bullet on the JB4 either.

I will get a video of the tuned 335 vs. the 818 eventually. The nice thing is that I'm just scraping the surface when it comes to power, especially considering the tiny TD04. After driving around a fair bit I can respect the opinion from others that 300 to 350 WHP would be enough for them. I want this to be a bit more wild than that, but not as wild as sponaugle's setup.
