View Full Version : Cleaner Ebrake

Here is a cleaner way to do the ebrake. I took a Lokar brake handle and mounted it to the 3/4" tube on 1" stand offs, bent a piece of 3/16 steel into a U with cable slots in the end, bolted it to the clevis that comes with the Lokar handle. I used 3/4" square aluminum for the cable bracket, drilled two holes for the cable ferrules small diameter near the edge and then used a saw to make them into slots. I put a piece of 1/8"x 3/4" flat stock as the cable retainer, bolted in 3 places with 14/-20 bolts in tapped holes in the square piece. I used 5/16 bolts through the back side of the frame piece and stacked washers to adjust the slack in the cables

Wayne,

Perfect timing for posting this. This and the shifter are two of our next things to complete.

Looks good Wayne. It wont hit the stock tank? Looks like you have the boyd tank here?

Will not work with the stock tank.
STiPWRD, you can't see the pics?

Wayne,

Did you use the angled FFR provided aluminum piece at the back of the tunnel against the firewall? If so, how did you choose to attach it. I have a couple ideas, but haven't settled on one yet.

Just checked them out on my phone, that does look nice. Sometimes my work network blocks pics on certain threads but not others :(

Will you be covering the e-brake with a boot or leaving as is?

Larry, I make a new thin aluminum part to connect them as it's just cover now

It will have a trim ring and boot from Lokar

Thanks for sharing, Wayne. I was just thinking of how to mount the cables for the Lokar ebrake. I also have the K-tuned shifter and Boyd tank. All great 818 mods/additions thanks to your creativity!

Just in time to be too late for me, lol. It is a nice clean look.

Well, I did the same on my car build a year ago so....

Totally missed it. I used the wrx brake, but modified the foot of the brake to squeeze under the k tuned foot and mount to the bracket your kit provided as well. That put the rear foot of the brake past the center tunnel, so I used a small piece of aluminum to bridge the difference. I also cut a piece of clear plastic to mount under the k tuned foot with plans to back light it. The part I didn't like was how high I had to mount the rear cover to get adjustment on the parking brake cables. I had just finished the initial install hours before reading this, lol. I'm in get-to-go-kart mode. After that, I may revisit this idea. I have to get go-karting out of my system first. Hehe.

Hi Wayne,

Like what you did on the E brake. It has inspired me to do some sort of mod like this on my roadster. Looks great! Thanks, WEK.

wleehendrick, seems like it only works without using the FFR tank. I use the FFR tank and don't want to change. :(

Wayne, is there anyway you can fab up a kit that would work with the FFR tank? Like fitting your 3.4 square alu block in front of the tunnel tubes instead of on the back? Or re-using the OEM bracket that you connect the ends of the cables into so the Lokar clevis can pull on that bracket (no need to fit the cables through an alu block)? Just throwing ideas, I can't experiment I don't have a Lokar in my hands. But I'm sure there is something to do to make it fit with the FFR tank, it's a kit car, we can do whatever we want, right! :)

(plz see this as the opposite side of when something goes wrong and people say "What were you expecting, it's a kit car")

Hi Frank, I've got the Boyd tank and wasn't think about interference with the FFR tank. I'm sure you can mount the Lokar someplace to make it work. It's actually very simple and the provided hardware gives you a few different options. Compared to putting a VR6 in the space meant for an EJ, it's trivial; just order one and make it happen!

Well you're both true and wleehendrick you got me on that one. loll

Actually my problem is not the handle as it's 10.5" long. It's a 2003, the one without a boot cuz it was inside the OEM plastic tunnel cover. Yeah that's the ugly ebrake. :) I think I can make the OEM handle work, so I'll keep the Lokar on the back burner. More on my thread.

For anyone that did this mod, what part numbers did you guys use for the cables?

The cables are the stock Subaru cables

I did the same lokar unit on my first 818S build. I was going to use it on the K818S build but with the stock tank and anaconda wiring harness I had to use the donor e-brk like the manual uses. IMO Wayne's harness, shifter and e-brk setup is far superior to the kits. JMO.

Agree totally, although I'm getting the OEM harness done by iWire, so no anaconda for me! I got my K-tuned shifter mounted and shifting last week, and am turning my attention to the Lokar e-brake next; I'll be mounting with standoffs like Wayne, but a little closer to the driver. I'll try to utilize the Subaru cable clamps and the pulls mounted to the Lokar Clevis, rather than fabricating hardware like he did.

I used the subie clamps and a threaded rod to the e-brk for adjustment on my lokar unit.

Hi Tom,

That sounds like just what I'd like to do... Do you have any photos or additional details you can share?

Thanks!
