View Full Version : Question - Sealing wind shield arms around body cut-outs?

I notice when I hand wash my roadster (Mk4), water enters the DS & PS footbox's from the openings between the windshield arms and the body cut-outs. I have the rubber and chrome cover installed but this is not water tight.
How have others resolved this?
I am planning to get a soft top at some point this summer and I would like the cockpit to be relatively water proof.
Thx

I like to use 3M Strip Caulk for things like this. Although my body is a few weeks away from going on, that is how I plan on sealing that area. Best when used from the back-side and smooshed (technical term) up into the void. It's a butyl rubber product, is really sticky, and doesn't harden.

I used clear windshield silicone, and then put the trim piece over that.

Thx,
Will either of these affect the paint?. My painter told me to keep all silicone products away from the final paint/clear coat.

Also, put a rubber o-ring between the nut and the chrome cover. You may want to try a thicker rubber gasket between the body and the chrome cover.
EDIT: Ooops, thought you were talking about the wiper arms; sorry.

Sealing this is an excellent idea (I'm still trying to figure out the best was to accomplish this, but will probably use a combination of these suggestions).
I can tell you first hand, if you are caught in a rain (even a light rain), this is the perfect path for the water to follow and drip directly on your clutch leg!!! I've been caught in rain before and when it was over, I was actually dry, except my left pant leg was soaked!
