View Full Version : What Is Left of the Donor If You Went That Route?

I know that a lot of people are going with the complete build kits now-a-days but I bet there are still a lot of donor builds left. It occurred to me that I'm loosing donor parts a few at a time but to the point that I have to think about it when inventorying them. So I thought I would ask how many do you still have and are you planning on loosing some more. I recently lost three items which are shown in the pic. Right now I have the PS rack, PS pump, alternator, coil, T - 5 trans, gas tank, fuel pump, PCM, throttle position sensor, barometric pressure sensor, ACT, transmission harness, and distributor. I think that's it! I have not included other parts that are used but did replace the original donor parts. Some are aftermarket and some were just "upgrades" that added things like disc brakes and 5 lugs. It's funny how this project keeps evolving with time. It's fun making the changes.

Thanks,

WEK.:cool::cool:

WEK : I went the donor route. In hindsight, I would not do that again. But it was a learning experience. Here's what's left of the donor (I sold this).

Darn! I didn't make that too clear. I meant what's left on your car still. Sorry for the confusion.

BTW: that looked like a pretty clean donor.

I went the mk4 base kit route too, but bought the pieces I wanted (my wife and the HOA wouldn't appreciate me tearing down a donor).
My original plan was kind-of budget minded (at least that's how I convinced my wife).
Since I stretched out the build and bought as I built and learned, I decided to avoid replacing old parts later and bought new / re-man'd as I was building.

I bought the whole front-end out of a 95 Mustang from a hot-rodder doing a project, but turned in the PS rack, disc calipers, MC, and booster as cores for re-man'd parts. And bought new rotors and Hawk pads.

I bought new-in-the-box from fellow forum members:

FFR radiator, FFR fuel tank, and all related hoses / pieces
Painless Wiring harness
Energy Suspension motor mounts

I bought new from vendors:

3G Alternator
Flywheel + new RAM clutch
Mallory Promaster Ignition Coil
Intank fuel pump
Speedhut electronic gauges and GPS speedo
Russ Thompson gas pedal
FFR LCAs
Lokar tranny mount E-Brake
Canton Overflow tank

I bought fully rebuilt and upgraded or had it rebuilt:

'93 302 with GT-40P ported heads, GT-40 intake, FMS F-cam
T5 tranny / S10 mid-shift
IRS Lincoln 3.55 w/posi
IRS rear knuckles

At this point the only donor parts I can think of that I kept were SN95 spindles and '95 pedal box.

Wow! Never thought about it in detail until I started putting it to print.

I guess I look at it differently. To me every part that fits on a donor Mustang I feel is a donor part whether purchased new, used as a core for a reman part or included in a complete kit. I embraced the donor concept and used the engine, trans, rear end, abs, cruise control, wiring harness and I could go on and on. So in my opinion, every one of these cars is a donor build.

Interesting question that I hadn't really thought about. Let's see, aside from what remains of the dieted wiring harness, working from the front to back I can think of:

Horns
Spindles
Engine block and main caps, crankshaft and timing cover. The rest was replaced & or upgraded when I rebuilt it.
Fuel rail and regulator, ECT, ACT and BAP sensors
Crank, water pump and PS pump pulleys
Alternator (was almost new on the donor)
Bellhousing, throwout bearing fork and block plate
T-5 trans but with new bearings and retainer
A9L ECU, relays and inertia switch
Pedal box
Parking brake handle
Rear axle housing and carrier (new gears, bearings and clutches)
Fuel tank cover and straps
Finally the original hood prop has now been reconfigured into a trunk lid prop!

I think that's about it. Lots of parts from the lightly crashed '89 became cores for new; things like brake booster, PS pump, calipers, etc. I gave the amazingly clean seats and other interior parts to my buddy Al for his Fox body and sold a lot of the exterior body parts and other odds and ends (some to people on the forums). I've still got the hood that I keep sanding down and using to do my spray pattern testing when I paint. One rainy Saturday after harvesting just about all that was worth keeping I hooked up the trailer and my buddy Aaron and I loaded it by dragging it up on it's belly (no wheels, remember) using a come-along and engine hoist for it's final ride to the scrapyard:

I built a 33 using a 93 Mustang donor.

I am building a type 65 coupe and just bought the engine , trans and rear from a salvage yard. I won't do the donor deal again. Too much stuff to get rid of for the work involved IMO.

The reason I thought about it is that I was inventorying my build to see what components I would eventually replace that I hadn't already. So the list kept growing and growing. I forgot how much really was donor and what wasn't (Frankeeski: lots of gray areas!). After Jeff put his list up, I saw that I had forgotten even more such as horns, crank, water pump, alternator, and PS pump pulleys, hand brake handle, bell housing, clutch fork. There are a few odd bolts and studs that are OEM fasteners for the water pump and alternator brackets that I cleaned up and used. Some of that stuff is hard to find. What's next to replace? WEK.

I purchased a worn out '87 GT donor, used the bell-housing, mid-plate, thermostat housing, parking brake handle and transmission speedometer drive gear. Passenger seat is my computer desk chair, much to my wife's disdain. :p I still have the transmission for my next build. Sold the Trick Flow intake to breakeven on the purchase. Someone stole my donor's rear end for scrap. Everything else went by-bye.

I harvested & used the following:
Radiator, front LCA, rear end, springs, shocks, ECU, wiring (parts), coil, brakes & brake booster, M/C, engine, tranny, gas tank, fuel pump, steering rack, inertia switch, parking brake,

Bought new:
Harness, gauges, 5-lug conversion, upper & lower intake manifold, wheels/tires, P/S pump, alternator, pedal assembly, turn signal, stereo, MAF, distributor, fuel injectors.

Also forgot accelerator pedal. It's on the replace list but haven't gotten there yet along with the addition of a dead pedal. That should make it a little more comfortable in the **** pit. WEK.
