Spare tire

Just wondered if anyone has a nice setup for a spare tire.

Lots of people have placed spares in the trunk. The problem comes when you actually need it. What do you do with the flat one? A tire plug kit and a small compressor are what most people seem to carry.

AAA or roadside assistance added to insurance. It's cheap. And my cell phone.

For times when AAA isn't going to get there quick enough and something catastrophic happens to a tire, I prefer to have a spare. If I'm in that position, I really won't care about what to do with the flat tire. But, if alone, it'll go in the passenger seat. If I have someone with me and it won't fit in the trunk with the lid opened, it'll get hidden on the side of the road in hopes that I can retrieve it later.

That said, the primary source will be the plug kit, mini 12v compressor, and my AAA card.

This is a space-saver spare from a '94 SVT Cobra and is the same circumference as the tires on my FFR.

And get a couple of those aerosol tire leak fix cans. Your tire guy won't be happy but a lot of leaks can be fixed w/ just the can. If you need to use it, you will find that the plug kit is a lot harder to use than you might expect. As a line tech, most of us discovered that the hand held reamer was really hard to use. We kept an old 3/16 drill bit handy and reamed the hole out w/ a battery operated drill

for longer trips I carry a donut spare with me in the trunk - aluminum rim one - couple of issues with the donut spares - carry some basic axle nuts as often the existing wheel nuts will not work well on the donut spares! Also test mount the donut spare to be sure it clears the disk brakes! Often you upgrade the brakes, works well with the offset rims most of us use BUT will not work with the donut spare! Thus be prepared to switch front to rear if needed. Also you will need a REALLY low profile jack to get the car raised up to change the tire. I also carry a small aluminum harbor freight jack that will slip under the frame if I can get about 3" clearance under any corner of the car. 'Course one day I'll have to have a picture of the look on someone face when i pull up behind them on the turnpike to see if I can help change their flat... they say I don't have my jack or it will not jack up enough... then I carry my duffel bag out of the trunk open it, out comes my jack - hook the hand on and change the tire with my battery impact wrench... in 15 minutes I'm done and out of there!

Of course I also carry with me a "get off the road" free card... AAA ... cell phone with the AAA app on it!
