View Full Version : Coyote owners and others - are there any downsides to the Coyote?

I do not want to offend anyone but here are some of my thoughts and experience on this - from an none purist perspective. Weekend driver with some possible track time in the future.
I have a Coyote in my Mk4 and I have to say that for me I could not have chosen a better engine - reliable, stable, modern ECU, latest technology from Ford Racing, great support, good gas mileage, great drivability, great power out of the box, sounds fantastic, very clean engine bay, modern look, etc., etc....
I was not going for authentic but a modern tribute. That's how I answer the question - Is it real? - well it is real however it's a modern tribute. When I open the engine bay there is some disbelief and amazement as there is no extra room but it looks modern and as if it were made by Ford Racing (several comments like this - mainly from experienced car technicians).
I made cost comparisons before deciding on an engine and compared against other crate engines and in the end there was not much in cost at the 400 HP range plus EFI and reliability. Not much difference on the end re price so the other benefits led me to my decision. There is some extra work needed to install a Coyote but it was worth it in the end. The Mk4 platform with a Coyote is nearly a perfect combination.
Can't see any down side with the Coyote - IMHO.
Perhaps others can share their perspective

I have a MK II with a carbureted 302. While I appreciate the elemental nature and feel of it, I have to believe a new Coyote is a fantastic mill for these cars. I think about it a lot (maybe too much).

Only thing that I can think of for me at least is that the footbox shrinks a bit

Foot box space is not an issue if you make the mods as per several posts on this topic. Actually my DS foot box has about as much space possible regardless of engine selection. The PS foot box can also be modified to match the DS foe extra passenger comfort.
In a perfect world, I would like to see a tko600 with a 6 speed (I have the 5 speed tko600 - great trans however for me I would like a 6th gear at the top end). Trans and rear end gearing needs to be considered to be sure the end result matches expectations. I am not sure if you can use a 6 speed with a Coyote but I do not see why not.

I installed a Coyote crate engine in my Mk 4 and am still working on getting it running right. The ECU is set for the stock air box and headers, so changing these requires modifications to the ECU tune. I installed an off-the-shelf tune from Chips and Performance which eliminated the stalls at stop lights, but below ~3,500 rpm the engine hesitates and tends to misfire. I'm currently working with a local tuner who uses a dynamometer to measure performance, etc. The power band on the engine now is in the 3-5,000 rpm range, and I'm scratching my head trying to figure out how to get better performance below that range. Suggestions appreciated....

I am not sure an off the shelf tune will work as the tune required specific inputs from your particular set-up i.e. intake dia, distance to the MAF, octane, and distance to the O2 sensors etc..
Contact JMS Chip (601 766 9424) - they will get you sorted. I purchased a SCT 3000 tuner from them with 3 tunes that incorporate my particular set up.
Before I got the tune I also installed the speed dial sensor but this alone did not completely eliminate the stalling issues (almost but not quite). I understand the Tune from JMS will solve all performance issues - no speed sensor needed.
Good luck

x2 on JMS. I added the speed dial and it completely cured my stalling issue, but the JMS tune sorted out the rest. Now it runs like a top and no shotgun backfires or hesitations. You can also pick up an SCT X3 on craigslist or mustang forums for roughly half price. Just make sure it's unlocked/unmarried. Once you have your tune, if anything else arises you can download livewire and datalog your motor.

Can appreciate both sides. We do like the idea of the simplicity and authenticity of a small block ford.
Also have the Coyotes which we customize to make an easier fit for install in the MKIV.
