View Full Version : 818S Intakes - what fits, what doesn't

We've tested a few so far with mixed results.

The K&N Short Ram Intake - 22-474R is just slightly too long putting a kink in the rubber coupler and contacting the frame. Plus you would be mounting the MAF at a 90 degree angle which is ok, but not ideal. While it could be made to fit I give it a 3 out of 10 on fitment, do not recommend.

The Perrin Short Ram Intake fits great, the only thing I don't like is the foam filter, they tend to degrade faster than the cotton/paper elements in my experience, especially with heat. Also the car will need a custom tune to rescale the MAF as it flows different than stock. This system gets a 5 out of 10.

Not pictured; the COBB SF intake. Fits great, cotton/paper filter, nice simple mounting solution to keep the system from bouncing around. And since it flows 100% the same as the factory box you won't need a tune as far as the intake is concerned. I give it a 9 out of 10 only because there's no heat shield or hydrophobic cover, both could be added or built custom.

Hope this helps. What has everyone else found/used?

The SPT intake fits really nice. The MAF is rotated 90 degrees. It's hard to tell in the picture, but it is not touching anything. You will have to fab a mounting bracket, otherwise it sags at touches the upper trailing arm. I could offer the brackets if there is enough interest once I get my design finalized:

I'd be interested in a mounting solution + heat shield for either the COBB SF or SPT intake. From looking at photos of several different designs, it seems that either of these would be a good fit for the 818.

Rori, I'm not sure who made the one off my donor but it fits like your's. The suspension doesn't move much but I worry about suspension movement, though it didn't hit in my limited go- karting. I'm going to attempt to use that space for the IC, I'd like to rotate the intake up into the right hump

Have to be careful rotating Bosch MAFs. If they aren't level, the wires sag pretty quickly and it throws of the A/F readings.

does that mean that the SPT may not be a good choice since it fits best with the sensor on its side?

The Cobb unit works best for these engines from a tuning, and reliability perspective.

Installed the COBB SF on the 818S #80 today and did another pull. Runs great, AFRs are spot on for a stock tune. Much more gooder!

Boxers do seem to like the Cobb intake. Probably because it is straight and plastic.

Straightness keeps air speed constant and minimizes turbulence.

ABS plastic doesn't heat and cool rapidly. Providing for more stable intake air temps.

Both of these keep rapid variations in the intake track to a minimum making it easier for the ECU to predict conditions and maintain smooth timing/fueling curves.

Any plastic tube with a level maf attachment should work equally well. If you are going to put a bend in, you want the maf before the bend, with ~2" from the end of the tube and 2" from the bend. You can also add honeycomb mesh before and after the maf to smooth the airflow.

The aftermarket CAI intakes for the wrx probably won't work well for the 818. They are designed to go through the access whole in the inner passenger fender well. And it looks like the frame in the 818 will not allow for the intended orientation. Forcing it close to the engine, sucking up hot air, and forcing the misplacement of the maf.

I'm actually interested in looking into a "snorkus" alla the 91-95 MR2.
