Hello all,
I want to build my first Cobra with a Roush 417 IR in it, but they are telling me that the Tall Deck will not fit under the hood. I don't think that is true, but what do I know. I know this is probably a dumb question, but will it fit?

Not familiar with specific Roush models or engines, but a 351 height deck fits just fine into these cars. Unless you're doing something strange with the induction, shouldn't be a problem.

There are a lot of 351W in roadsters. Edwardb summed it up pretty well - "Unless you're doing something strange with the induction". You won't be able to fit a carb and air cleaner on top of a medium or high-rise intake manifold. I've got an Edelbrock performer with a Holley 7150 double pumper. I have it 'dressed up' with a 'Cobra' oval air cleaner. The air cleaner just barely fits under the body and hood.

If you are dead set on that engine you could try to source or make a Supersnake hood scoop to give more room.

Haven't heard that terminology but Roush calls the Winsor engines short and tall deck instead of 8.2/9.5. So we're not talking about something different than the norm. Darn, I was excited about reading about a new custom block or something. There is limited space even for the 302 as I found when I added a 1 inch spacer between my Holley upper and lower manifold. Then I had to add an adaptor to lower the TB to clear the hood more to the side though. Those tall high performance manifolds can be problematic.
WEK.

OK, had a second to look at the Roush site. I'm assuming you meant 427 IR, not 417. Nice looking engine. Pricey... I have to agree. That 8-stack intake plus pictured air cleaners and covers probably won't fit under the standard hood and scoop setup.

This experience may be completely irrelevant with the 351W (the brain space that used to hold 302/351 knowledge is getting overriden with 818/Subaru info), but for the 302, you could use the Mustang Fox Body convertible engine mounts (or comparable aftermarket?) to buy a small amount (0.75" IIRC) of height clearance. Just something to keep in mind if you end up needing to squeeze out the last sliver of clearance. Good luck!

Christian, I'm looking at the 427/538 polished w/power steering.
