View Full Version : What's the deal with the firewall?

I have been mounting and drilling my foot boxes and firewall the last few days. The firewall that goes to the top square tube on the drivers side kind of flaps around. It mounts fine to the tube and angled bracket. Is there something later that holds this in position? Just looks strange and manual is not very clear on this part. LOL.

Is that where it touches the footbox? I can't be of much help, haven't got that far yet. A picture might help, so when I get to that point I'll know what to do.

The previous frames had a cross tube there to connect to. Not sure what the new coupe owners have done to get around this. Maybe ask the QSL's they were looking at the same problem a little while ago.
good luck,

Weird. Ben a while since I built a coupe, but I thought there was a 3/4 bar that the top of the fire wall mounted to.

What some people have done is to use some of the thin weather strip material between the top of the foot box and the firewall. Once you place the thicker weather strip on top of the firewall piece and set the body down, that part of the firewall becomes fairly rigid. At least, that's what I've seen. The body is still sitting on the frame with my Coupe, and I can see it working. I personally may end up fabricating a couple of small "L" shaped brackets, and rivet them to the firewall at the top of the foot box, just to make sure it is stiff.

Sounds like a good plan. Thanks.

That is one of the differences from the black body coupes. I believe SQL added a bar back in there for that purpose.

Mr and MRS QSL are the handle names here on the forum. They are building a coupe for Mrs. QSL.

The newer coupes do not have the cross bar. But those that have completed their cars say that it contacts the body and the body holds it in place. Apparently it is very sturdy once the body is resting on it. As for the fit around the footbox, I plan on cutting a new piece that will sit behind the firewall to fill in the gap. Of course I'm also pushing my firewall out about 4 more inches to fit the North Racecars AC/heater unit so my gap is even bigger!
