I now have all of my suspension, brakes & steering items installed. Having a ton of fun! And, I just received my previously back ordered FFR mahogany steering wheel. Very nice! While waiting for the wheel to arrive, I had Russ Thompson do his turn signal mod to the hub. Nice stuff there, also! Anyway, I am now having trouble getting the hub installed on the upper steering shaft. I'm not sure how tight a fit it is supposed to be, but this is VERY tight! The rounds & flats all line up, but tapping with a hammer still only gets it about half way on. I did smooth out some perceived burrs on the end of the shaft. No luck with that. I'm afraid to beat on it harder, and also wonder how I'd ever get that hub off in the future if needed. Anybody else experience anything like this? Suggestions?

Rod,
You shouldn't worry about getting the hub off. You can accomplish that with a small hub puller. I would be concerned about using too much force to install it. Have you tried some lubricant? A tight fit is OK but you shouldn't have to beat it on. I would check the surfaces and perhaps a little sanding of the inside surface of the hub to ease it a little. Good luck, WEK.

If you are talking about the steering shaft going thru thr Russ Thomson VW column, yes...he said he had a small batch go thru with a slightly undersized nylon bushing...it wasn't quite drilled out to 3/4" I believe...

If you are trying to make the double D shaft go through the hub, it doesn't go but about half way. There is a small ledge where the flats stop.

This is the fitment of the alloy hub onto the end of the upper steering shaft. It is tight! I would have thought it would have slipped on a little easier, similar to how easy my front wheel hubs went onto the spindles. Anyway, thanks for the help. I'll check the ledge where the flats stop, and keep working on it until I get it right.

Rod,
I just installed my RT turn signal and steering wheel and had exactly the same problem. I ended up enlarging in the Delrin spacer very slightly and then applying some oil on the shaft.
