View Full Version : What year Mustang for Power Rack
I have ordered my Mark IV which will be picked up on August 8. I am trying to order as many parts now so I will be ready to go on arrival. I would like to use the Flaming River Power Rack Kit and their pump. Question is it for a 79-93 or 94-03 Mustang equivalent? Assume it is for the earlier model.
BTW how do I manage my profile? I would like to add at the bottom of my posts that this build is a small block 351w/427, IRS, Power Steering and upgraded Willwoods all around including 4/6 rears.

I've used 87-93 racks for both of my builds. So I know those work. Don't know if the newer ones work or not. To edit your sig line: Click "Settings" at the top RH of the screen. Then click "Edit signature" under "My settings" along the LH side of the screen. There may be a minimum number of posts required before you can edit your sig line though. Seem to remember something about that...
Edward,
Is there a difference in the internals of the 87-93 vs. the 94-03? I was under the impression it was just a difference of the mounting points. I am getting worried I may have mis-ordered.

I've used OEM '87-'93 power racks on 3 different roadster builds; 2 with 3.0 turn LtL and one (my own) with 2.25. I believe that the later racks may be valved a bit differently but can't confirm, nor can I say if there is an anvantage to that if they are. As far as mounting points the later racks fit into the chassis the same as earlier ones however the steering shaft coupling is different.

Jeff's response is very similar to what I would have said. My only experience also is with the 87-93 racks, and they work very well. The later ones may fit but there are differences. I don't think there's any reason to reinvent anything here.

The '94 and up racks will physically bolt in, but usually require trimming of the tie-rod ends due to OAL being a tad longer. The tie-rod ends are also metric thread versus the Fox-era rack using SAE. There are different valvings from OE applications. Most of us Mustang guys prefer the Cobra rack, but it is VERY hard to find.
Some good tech can be found here: http://www.maximummotorsports.com/tech_steering_rack.aspx
You can also go directly to AGR, where they make racks custom to your specs with several different valve offerings. I have an AGR in my DD Fox Mustang and it is a great rack to drive!

Thanks guys for the responses but I am still lost. I went and ordered the earlier model 79-93 from Flaming River with their Saginaw Type II pump thinking I was getting the best available. I am now having second thoughts and cannot figure out what is the exact difference between the old and new. Which one will be better on my Mk IV? I am also having problem with March coming up with a mounting bracket for the Type II serpentine. Would I be better off returning the Flaming River and going with an AGR power rack and a AGR pump or same with a KRC. Stuck in a dilemma. Henry.
P.s.this is helping me to get to 10posts so i can post my build details.

The Saginaw Type II is a good pump, used by lots of pulley/FEAD companies, but I do not believe March supports it in their standard pulley kits (just old school Saginaw and Ford's CII pump).
Nothing against the FR rack, I've used them in Mustangs as well, but the AGR can be spec'd to your Factory Five. They know the weight, etc. of these cars and can help you with the road feel you want. Call them to discuss. Then use one of their specially valved Ford CII pumps with a standard March serpentine kit and it'll all bolt right on. The AGR stuff is pricier than reman parts store stuff, but I think a bit cheaper than the FR rack.
