View Full Version : Rear shock mount a bit loose
I haven't torqued the bolt down, but the upper shock mount on the rear suspension has some extra play in it, even with the spacers in. You can see the thread of the bolt in this picture:

Do I need to add some washers in there or will it tighten up when I torque the bolts down?

Whoa there. Don't try to tighten. You have the wrong spacers. According to the instructions, attach the body end of the shock to the upper shock mount using the two equal length (1.09”) spacers. The spacers pictured are much shorter. Not unusual to have to "massage" the spacing a bit for these kinds of mounts. But not that much.

If it makes a difference, I have pin drive IRS. The instruction manual just says to use two of the "smaller" spacers. My inventory sheet has them as .43", which they are. There is no way that two 1.09" spacers would fit - you can see how close it is with two .43" spacers.
Also, I just noticed that the manual says that the big spacer on the bottom should be in back, but the inventory sheet says it should be in front. Which is correct? The manual only has instructions for standard width, but I just assumed it was the same as the pin drive width.

You're right. Separate sections in the manual for solid axle vs. IRS. It obviously makes a difference. And you're also right, the manual says two of the "smaller length" spacers on the top. But no dimensions are given. I'm sticking with my answer though. Don't try to make up that difference by tightening and moving the chassis mounts in that much. Either there are different spacers required there or you need to add washers/shims. Hopefully someone with IRS experience can say what they did.

Edwardb is correct never tightened to get the ears to pull in. Spacers are the wrong ones. Im not sure of the measurement im not in the shop. Shimming is ok but with that much gap I would make a new set.

It would be a big help if someone with pin drive IRS could take a look at their upper shock mount and let me know how theirs compares to mine. Also, I'd like to know where the big spacer goes on the bottom mount (front or rear).

I assume you have tried phoning FFR? What did they say?

Here you go. Thought of this thread while at the London Cobra Show today. This pic is the rear upper coilover mount on the PS of the Factory Five Mk4 IRS display chassis at their booth. I didn't have anything to measure with, but snapped the pic for you to study. Clearly shows the spacers are long enough to not bend the tabs. Also appears the front one is slightly longer than the rear one. Can't get much closer to the source than this. Also posted in your similar thread over on the other forum. HTH.
