Okay, so the "manufactured patina" look has been all the rage in the rat rod scene for quite a few years and it often gets a bad rap. But, I've never seen it done on a Cobra replica and thought it just may be fun to show up at the track with something a bit irreverent. Although my current project has focused on period-correct looks, sometimes it seems a bit too shiny.

What better antithesis to 7074 than to build a track-only beater - something that looks like an unrestored original that was ridden hard in the '60s and put away wet for forty years - something along the lines of how CSX 3047 (one of the original 427 S/C cars) looks these days.

I'm going to let this "barn-find build" idea simmer in the back of my mind for a while as I finish 7074. More to come, so watch this space!

Actually the story of a certain "Insurance salesperson" spending countless years with a dental pick tool removing the repaint from the original gold paint you see above is what true legends are made of.

Steve (that person I alluded to above) spent over a year doing so..........

I'm not big on manufactured patina. Build it straight then go run the wheels off of it and EARN that patina ;)

Jeff - I like your thinking. The components I'm considering using would be mostly vintage; i.e., lots of swap meet stuff and things I and friends have laying around, but without cleaning it up. As for the chassis and body, nothing special to keep it fancy, shiny, or capable of winning even a cruise night award, then just flogging the snot out of it at the track to earn it's chops.

Just for the record, I'm not thinking of painting faux rust on the chassis or simulated paint flaking on the body - I just want one that has that old, weathered look - much of which will be brought to the party by the parts that make up the soul of the car.

I hate the idea of a faux patina paint job, but building a "driver" with the parts you have and then using it in anger is awesome. And what the rat rod scene was originally about.

I had the pleasure to meet and talk with Rocky, the owner of CSX2386 for the past 40+ years. He's driven this car on most tracks in this region, as such a car should be. Figured this was just the example of what you're thinking of.

Looks like my next project is going to be a real barn-find (or behind-the-barn-find)... I guess the FIA / USRRC car will have to wait. Can't get any more real than this patina.

These pictures were taken after a day of cutting down thirty years of growth, including a few good sized trees.

He was very outgoing and personable. Great guy with lots of knowledge. Love the car and yes, he and the car are as one! I will be sure to send your best next time I see him. He also had his 66 gt350 there.

Now if you could give it a paint job that included the rust spots reproduced so convincingly that you were able to fake people into believing it was actually metal, that would be fun! Model builders do this sort of thing all the time when they weather their kits. I think it would be a nifty twist on a 'new' roadster.
