New 289 forum! cool!

ok, so I had time to get my pictures uploaded...
Some lead up to the Journey! ...long....
.I was planning on another build and when I heard that there was talk about the 289FIA it seemed like perfect timing. It is no secret that I enjoy building cars and the creative process leading up to first start and enjoyment of the feedback after a wheel out of a completed project....driving these cars is fun too....lol... The Green Lantern and The Flash were/are fantastic cars...I felt conflicted driving one and not the other. The Cobra is my childhood dream car, but the 818 is such a neat car and begs to be pushed and to be honest gives me more feedback when pushed hard. The whole concept of the 818 is just awesome....I was actually getting ready to order another 818...then rumors of the 289FIA...I know! BOTH!!! well that plan was quickly veto'd by Household 06 (Military term for the "wife")...lol...I don't think I can ever be without a Cobra of some sort in the Garage...so....why not!
But now, with the 289, being that it is new for Factory Five and knowing the whole deal about the FIA car and all, I am not sure if an all out assault of over the top power and accessories would be correct or even well received....So for several weeks I struggled on how I could build another cobra and not do a "stock" build...I hate stock, but still be respectful to the purist nature of the 289 FIA. Several repetitive phone calls to Wayne and Tony of potential ideas...I know they were probably ready for me to decide one way or another....
When I was building the Green Lantern in Wayne's shop I had the pleasure of building along side him (yes I was cheating when he wasn't looking). Anyway he built a 408W Cobra called the Blackwidow...As the name would indicate... all black! no stripes! It was so simple, but geez that car looked awesome....So I knew I was going to build a Black 289.... but....I want to use a 289 CSX car as a guide...I didn't want another Blue one (though the one in the open house pic looks sweet)... red is nice, but the 818 was red....so which CSX....so another week on the internet and thumbing through books...I stumbled across CSX 2001 "The First Production Cobra"....and the color of the car was BLACK! though I understand it wasn't originally black and had a 260 Cid engine it...but it was black now and with a 289 in it....
So First Production Cobra ... Factory Five's newest Production Roadster .... Why that seems like the perfect fit!
So my plan after or at the open house is to order:
289 FIA Roadster
- Powder coated Chassis
- 3 link suspension
- Wipers
- Heater
- Wind wings
- Gauges
- Floor Mats
And while I have been waiting for the open house to draw ever nearer....
I ordered:
289 FIA wheels
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30019&d=1402535871
Correct oil pan
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30020&d=1402535872
Some VeryCoolParts power plant of course (347 stroker) Dyno'd at 431/431 - not pictured are the Webers!
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30018&d=1402535870
I also spent some time my new welder and whipped up these valve covers

http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30021&d=1402535873
I was going to clean up the welds but the pics I saw of the originals...they all looked pretty raw...so....I put the grinder away.
Erik W. Treves

I then worked on some small things and put together and painted my reservoirs
http://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=30023&d=1402536194
Made a call to the "brake master" - Richard Oben and got my rear end all put together with some disk brakes and custom axles...and of course everything went right together and all hardware included...couldn't ask for more!

Eric, are you going with that tailhousing? I'd think you would want to go with the S-10 tailhousing so you could have a mid-shift...
SO JEALOUS!

I am staying with the tail housing but putting a mid shift kit under the tunnel...that's the plan anyway :)

Karen,
yes pin drive which requires losing 2.5 inches per side of the 8.8 and then reversing the brakes and custom axles. I got the housing shortened in town here for a song, and Richard supplied everything else...I just bought the complete setup off his website http://www.northracecars.com/Brakes.html . He called Moser directly and had my axles custom made for my application....one shot, one kill...his stuff went in without any issue...
Erik W. Treves
06-20-2014, 04:53 PM
...so I have a T5, and the 289 had a toploader in it so the shifter was up a bit....so, I got a S10 tail shaft housing and top plate but then I would have to change to a GPS speedo..... the spec racer mod is above the tunnel....well....break out some beers and the welder....
I am not done as final location will depend on what feels good in the seated position...but not only did I move the shifter forward but it is offset...I noticed in several pictures that the shifters were biased to the driver's side...so hopefully this works and looks right... I think it will fit under the tunnel which is a plus! I kept the stock shifter and drilled a hole a low as I could stand..(I will cut off the rest of the stock shifter after it is all setup).I made a temp setup and hooked it all up...shifted great with no slop!..we'll see once I get it in the car!

Important question - are the footboxes aluminum or fiberglass?
David Hodgkins
06-23-2014, 09:07 PM
Les, they are aluminum.
NukeMMC
06-24-2014, 04:42 AM
You can get fiberglass footboxes from Acton but getting them to fit the FFR would be the trick. If you wanted to, you could always 'glass over the aluminum once it's installed to make it look a little closer, but the shape isn't quite right, so that would be polishing the cannonball.
LesMurray
06-24-2014, 09:02 PM
I guess one could seal the edges of the aluminum and get some flat off-white paint to make them appear somewhat like fiberglass.

So...starting slow...trying to figure out when to take a week off and go nuts.... I got most of my panels back from the coater today...they came out really good. Worked all day at my normal job and came home ...wife was still about 2 hours out from arriving home....so what to do with 2 free hours.....I had to keep stepping over the rear end and it was pissing me off...so... in to the car it went...problem solved!!

One box thrown out...only 20 more to go....
I will add one observation... I normally order just the basic kit....I am surprised how complete the COMPLETE kit is...The 3-link box had everything in it and all the bushings fit right in..no fuss!! I was working on 1 task and everything I needed was in the one box....very cool....
going to attack the foot boxes tomorrow I think so I can run the wiring and ready to drop the motor in maybe as early as next weekend.....we'll see....

06-26-2014, 05:37 AM
Fun stuff E :) I saw the FIA at LCS last weekend...they've done a good job. Aside from the body, a bit of tin in the trunk area and the fuel filler piping (I predict that the 5 90 degree elbows will lead to slooooow fill ups) it is pure MK4. You are correct; the complete kit is just that. If you stick to their recipe it truly does have everything except for the drivetrain, battery, rolling stock and paint. As always I'm loving the updates so keep 'em coming!

Another hour and half at it today...lol....it's killing me! emptied out a few more boxes, got the pedal box together, brake masters, steering shaft (have to find those stupid washers), hung the last corner of the suspension. Have to pick up a power rack in the morning and then on to routing brake lines and fuel lines. Will get the rest of the aluminum in the engine bay done this week to include mounting heater and windshield wiper motor...starting to look like something though!

E,
When using FFR spindles the UCSs mount in the vertical holes. I see that you have yours installed in the horizontal mounting position as would be done with donor spindles. You trying something different on purpose?
Jeff
Erik W. Treves
07-03-2014, 07:31 AM
Just following the guidance I was given. Pin drive lowers with two piece spindle. This is how the car at the open house was setup. Good eye btw!
I am using the stock size GT brakes up front and T-bird rears. THe 15 inch wheels just clear the calipers.
Not sure about the chassis ... the body sits on a MK 4 frame...my GUESS is that it could fit with a little tweak here and there.
Jeff Kleiner
07-03-2014, 02:40 PM
Thanks for the clarification Erik. After I posted the question above Ron E told me that when Jim S. built the FFR car he determined that the FIA's narrower track and wheels would allow using the 2 piece spindles if it was assembled in this configuration.
Really enjoying watching you bring this together!

Thanks Jeff.
Anyway...Got a FULL day to work on it..happy days!
All 4 corners are done and if I had tires I would be a rolling chassis. Brakes are all run...waiting on some B.O.'s so I can bleed them. Firewall is mounted and installed heater box. I have started to install the cockpit aluminum. Expect to have the rest of cockpit done tomorrow. Need to start on the dash as well and run the fuel lines. Will probably get that done first tomorrow.
Anyway..here you are your pics at about 2.5 days worth of work....

Working through some of the smaller details now...and since I am waiting on some back orders, I am just trying to ensure I have nothing from keeping me from reaching the finish line quickly....
Worked on validating the mid-shift conversion. Put the tranny only in the car and was presently surprised that it all fit under the tunnel! AND I didn't have to cut any on the back bone to get it up there. I am still waiting on the correct shifter handle...
Also mocked up the reservoirs where I think they will finally end up. I think it looks pretty good.
Worked some more on the dash as well...no pics of that though...
My wife did manage to catch me finally making "VROOM VROOM" noises as I was shifting away trying the mid-shift conversion... too funny...I asked her grab a few more pics with me in the seated position so you can see how your hand lays on the shifter....it is moved forward and biased to the driver side.

Great job so far Erik, I'm enjoying your build thread and the progress.
May I ask a couple questions? Just trying to figure out how much changes with the 289.
The 289 only comes as a complete kit, correct?
Is that the stock 289 dash, or did you modify it? (the extra panel with the clock?) It looks like the FFR donor-style dash, with the pre-drilled holes and didn't the 289 have a more horizontal configuration or was that just the FIA? (not critiquing, just trying to understand the difference) btw, I like the clock / extra panel. Also like your mid-shift configuration. I installed the S10 mid-shift and think the shifting is REALLY comfortable there. Did you install an aftermarket/short-shifter? It improves the smoothness and positive gear changes.
I never saw the wiper motor mounted there, but I really like it. Was that also a custom mod by you? Nice install.
Can you let us know any other custom touches? Since yours is the first build, trying to differentiate the FFR changes with you mods.
Thanks for sharing and please continue to post, COOL build!

RIght now you can buy the car as a complete kit only...which is OK IMO, it really is complete...has everything. The dash is the stock dash that I added the little piece to the bottom. I am after CSX 2001 (1st production 289 cobra), so the layout is what it is..just trying to copy that car best I can. The actual shifter is stock, but I corrected for the long throw by changing the pivot point on my mid shift kit, so it does all the "extra" work. Result is that I now have a short throw :)
The wiper is my own piece and copied off the forum for a while back.
I have done a few custom things to it, but will wait till the end when everything is done before I start listing it so I don't have to keep track of the ones that didn't make the cut.
thanks!

Erik, I don't know how accurate you want to be but the dash "chin" is not centered, but offset to the left. Here is an original.

Haven't touch the car since last weekend....so I took today off and got busy...the day was made perfect by the arrive of some "VeryCoolParts".....made my day....the car is looking pretty close to CSX 2001 I think.....I took some styling cues from some other CSX cars as well... anyway... here are the pics to prove it happened>

hmm...that might explain why I was thinking something was up...there are not a lot of pictures of CSX 2001 and none straight from the back...It looked to me that it was centered but the tunnel was narrower ...that is an easy fix!!

Did a lot of detail work and re-checking of items since I am going pretty quick...hit a road block/speed bump today when I went to put the drive shaft in and my pinion flange is bigger than the bolt circle than the FFR supplied drive shaft....took the wind right out of my sails...so I decided to clean the entire garage and put all my tools away and just do a "reset" day....
I did manage to work on the dash some....

Kinda of a slow rainy day here...
Got all the grounds attached to the car for behind the dash, the lights, horns, fan ....
installed horns, finished off wiring the dash with the exception of the russ Thompson turn signal kit. Mocked up the pass side pipe so I could check something... bolted up the water pump...received my pulleys... they came in as underdrive (rrrrrrr)... I guess we'll see...they will have to powder coated....ordered a ton of crap from VeryCoolParts as well...I am focused now of getting it started! pretty close really...if I had the parts I needed, I could start it tomorrow I think...but I guess I will clean up some tomorrow and redo my hit list to see if there any other things I can do...might just throw the body on it and mount everything up just so I can get ahead....
anyway...just 2 pics tonight..

Not too much to report today...felt like I just walked around in circles today in the garage...finished up on the dash...just waiting on the glove box to start covering...not pics of that yet...I did start placing things on the body so I get it off to paint...wipers and gas cap. I couldn't find a gas cap deflector that was correct so I made one.

VeryCoolParts INDEED! I have stack envy Erik! That setup looks so good  and I like the black -AN fittings. looks more period correct.
That engine is the jewel of the engine bay!
not familiar with the generator, but it is a honker.
still trying to figure out, is the leaf spring functional? (I see coil shocks, so I'm thinking no.) but like the look

I didn't know you played tennis Erik.
Thanks for taking us along on this ride. You know over the years it's become acceptable to kind of "free form" build the 427 style cars with more modern components but to me the with the FIA the builder almost has an obligation to lean to a more period correct theme. You're doing a great job of incorporating the new while paying homage to the original cars' history.
Cheers,
Jeff

You ever have one of those days where you spent all day working on the car and I turn around and it looks like you didn't do anything.......
I had one of those days....
It's all those little detail things to copy CSX 2001 that are KILLING me...It is almost like building a LOCOST 7.....everything has to be made....
I am SO CLOSE to getting this thing started...missing a few -AN fittings and some line....and have to hook up the battery...and we're off....
today ... completed mock up of the entire cooling system and alternator/generator bracket. Also mounted the degas/surge tank...not sure the leaf spring will get done...not too much room now....
to me it is pretty darn close....tomorrow I am going to mount the fuel pressure regulator and order the few fitting I need....would really like to get this thing started next weekend!!!
anyway here ya go...looking pretty close.....

I got quite a bit done today....the front dress is all on the motor, put coolant in the motor. Worked some on the dash and finalized the shifter....took a bit longer to do than I though...hope to have it started next weekend!... making it look "old" sure does take a while....I am normally running at this point...but I think it will be worth it....the shifter conversion seems to be working well...a bit longer throw than I would like..but easily adjustable.
Anyway..I would put more pics of the motor, but other than everything being painted and hose clamps...not much different....the dash is looking better!

I believe the FIA rules required the sidelines to not be outside of a plumb line from the body's width. Eric's basis for his build is CSX2001, which was not an FIA car, but was raced in Europe and had FIA and comp-spec work done. As you can see by his pics of CSX2001 above and in earlier posts, he is keeping things very close.

Thanks...I am trying to stay as close to the original as I can...I took some departures in places..the tires for one. I could have gone with original tires, but they are very expensive and handle like crap...I will plan on driving the car afterwards..so the Hoosiers seemed reasonable and they don't look too bad...the radiator upper hose is on the opposite side than stock..but the FFR radiator was free with the kit... lot's of little things here and there, but I am TRYING to stay as close to the core as possible.. the black wheels...I think this is a personal choice here as well. The Meatballs will be vinyl and not painted. The emblems on the nose and trunk are $300 a piece...I am going to have to think about that for a bit... anyway...it may not be perfect or exact, but I think I have given it my best and hopefully the end result will be my best car...though the Green Lantern is a hell of a car!

first gotta say very nice work.
I am looking at a 33 HR build in the near future and am liking the 289, may have to rethink.
question: there has ben lots of talk on the boards of the problem with fittmit of the body and panels on the 33 and MK4
How is the fittmit on the 289 since you have one of the first and are at that stage.

Working through the final details before paint...I covered the tunnel...it looked great all day...it has developed a small crease just below the shifter..so I may have to recover... but overall I like the look... I also changed out the yellow lenses for period correct clear and then got colored bulbs... roll bar should be here tomorrow so I should be able to weigh the car and setup the suspension...have to get moving. I have to carry the car down to House Of Power and get some VeryCoolParts dyno tuning for these webers...the thing fires right up and sounds awesome...I hope we're close! Now that I have 5 minutes and have had a good night sleep, I figured I would debrief the trip to "house of power"...
So kinda of a whirl wind trip..Hit the road Sunday afternoon and back to the house monday night...
Once again..thanks to Wayne Presley! I have to say, I followed his recommendations to a tee and did not deviate...this paid off huge when it came down to the mustard.
The car fires right up and has excellent idle characteristics. Responds excellent to throttle and sounds awesome. I spend a lot of time sync'ing the carbs and Wayne gave it the thumbs up when he rechecked it. The Mallory dissy worked perfect right out of the box as did the crane ignition.
The car has a VERY broad power band from 2000-5000. The carbs did come setup rich. We did not have the jets to get the AFR down to where we needed, but made a change anyway to see how the car would react. It reacted in a very predictable manner, which was really neat to see, since I am fuel injection guy...too easy...more work than pushing a few buttons, but still easy... I had Wayne order me up some smaller jets and will make the change...my guess is that I will pickup a little up top.. The cam is just the limiting factor I believe at this point. No big deal since most of my driving is in the 2000-5000 range.
Body is at paint...so this weekend I will finsih up installing the interior and getting everything finished.
I was able to get 4* caster and 1* camber out of the Hotrod spindles with pin drives...but that's it! I will probably leave it like this...might make a slight adjustment..but looks good.
anyway...I will add more as i think about it....
once again!!!!

You didn't say whether camber is + or -. I retrofitted one recently, also a power steering car, and was running out of adjustment at similar settings. By shortening the rear adjuster sleeve approximately 1/4" I was able to achieve my desired -.75* camber and +7 degrees caster.

Eric,
I'm having some difficulty with wheels and tires on my Mk3 and noticed that the pic you have in post 98 looks similar to the issue I have. When I did my bodywork, I was able to shift the body over a little to account for what seems to be a normal misalignment of the older FFR bodies in relation to the front wheels. With the 17" wheels I was originally using, the 245 tires had a nearly vertical sidewall and they were at the edge of acceptable in relation to the fender flare. I picked up a set of the FFR 15" wheels and just had Avon CR6ZZ tires mounted on them today. Unfortunately, these new tires (also 245 in the front) have a much more pronounced sidewall bulge and look like that pic in post 98.
It appears that in post 102 you've corrected some of the protruding sidewall, but it could just be the angle. Did you do anything between those pics to align the body or move the tire in (negative camber, perhaps)?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated... I'm thinking my best bet will be to order a set of custom backspaced wheels from Richard Oben at North Racecars.
Erik W. Treves

I know..I know...I hadn't noticed the date until you said something...lol.......I don't have any finger nails left....I been asking>?!?! it was supposed to be done last Friday...then it was supposed to be in primer last Friday...Wayne was going to check on it.... Good news is that EVERYTHING else is done. I literally just have to put the body on and all the lights and such and I am done provided I don't damage anything in the time being....you're talking 2 days max....and we are doing finally assy down at Wayne's Shop, so that should make it go even quicker.... I am hopeful I get a call Wed that I can start heading down that way for the weekend. I have been doing nothing but looking a naked cobra for weeks now and the weather has been awesome!!! figures :D

ANyway, here it is back home...have a few minor details to knock out... trunk/Hood seals, put the meatballs on, repaint the side pipes, and flip the quick jacks so they don't cut you wide open...The paint is fantastic and I think it puts a nice wrap on the whole project and idea.... I am still tore about painting the wheels black to match the original...but I like the way it looks... anyway..thanks for hanging with the journey to this point....A final shout out to Dave, Tony, Sally, and the rest of my Factory Five Family...after the 5th kit....this is finally the car (289) I have always wanted as a kid....AND NOW I HAVE ONE!

Spent Friday and all day today....got a good 150 miles out of the car...tuned all the cruise rpms....man am I tired of drilling out jets on the webers....I miss my fuel injection!!!! I tuned it a little on the lean side for now since it was 55* out today...it should richen up nicely in the summer. It does pop a little on decel..but it drives great and seems to be happy! Found a few things that I needed to fix, adjust, and tighten...but all normal stuff with a new build... drives great though! it is loud! I got spoiled with the turbo :p I expect that I am getting around 14-16 mpg since I don’t have vacuum advance....oh well...the webers do seep gas from the base gaskets after shutdown...seems to be pretty common, but I need to see if I can fix that...I was told “good luck”... I will keep after it. Anyway.,... removed the wide band... wiped it all down...ready to go out in public now....looking forward to New Years!!!!!! Dare I say.... it’s done!..... I burned down Wayne phone....sorry brother....I miss my fuel injection and the internet wasn't much help at all....your help was dead on perfect!

I've read through your build thread several times. Turned out great and you do in hours what takes me days... I'm thinking about another build. Would be my third. 289 FIA is what I'm thinking about. Most everything fits together with what I've already learning with the Mk3 and Mk4 Roadster builds. But learning about 15 inch wheels and tires. Tell me more about the Hoosier tires you used. Exact size, model, where you bought them. etc. Is this a street tire or supposed to be a racing tire? Most of what I've seen for Hoosier tires are bias belt vs. radial. Is that the case? What's your experience with how they handle? I'm finding what everyone else has found. That tire selection for 15 inch wheels is really limited.
On that note, saw from the pictures that Factory Five mounted Goodyear Polyglas tires on their demo build. Took me awhile to remember where I'd heard that before. Then I remembered it was well known muscle car tire from the 70's. I was around then (for sure) but in those days couldn't afford anything that had those mounted. Also a bias belt, and quite expensive sold as throw-backs for cars from the era. Not sure those are what I'd want on a real driver.

AS I noted earlier the Hoosiers initial impression are that they ride pretty darn nice. I have not leaned on them in a corner yet. I think I have the sizes listed in the earlier post...if not I will uncover the car in the next few days and post those for future reference...I choose them based on the Goodyear Billboard sizes, since those fit, I figure why not go with what fits...I didn't have time to mess around :)
found it on page 3 I think.... tires are 245/60/15 and 275/60/15

Very nice build! I have a 289 kit on order, due in early March. Spending the time between now and then reading, learning and making a list of questions that I need to research. Plenty of inspiration on the boards, need to keep the project goal (and budget) in mind though and resist the temptation to tweak one more thing. Probably won't happen though...

I think we have spoken, just checking- I have an 8.8 rear axle Rebuilt and shortened to the length needed for your FIA build. I had it shortened for a customer.. But he never built the car. Let me know if you are interested... Or if we have already spoken.
