What would the absolute cheapest turnkey option be and where should I pursue it? I've seen videos like this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQLUJfArkrA) before and they always make me do a few searches to see if I could afford to make my own father's dreams come true. I remember doing a search on Ebay motors and finding quite a few down even to $18k. Ebay is obviously a changing resource (and perhaps my search has changed) and so I don't see any below $20k.

I'm wondering, if I just wanted a runner with no special paint job, fancy additions or extras - what's the absolute cheapest way for me to get in a Roadster?

Buy an unfinished MK I or MKII

You probably will have some difficulty finding a roadster that is very basic unless you luck out and someone is getting rid of a MKI or II that was built some time ago. I saw one that was very basic and the guy had had it for over ten years. It wasn't for sale though. I think the trend now is for people to buy the complete kit and go from there. That is a 20k investment before building, drive train, and paint. I'm thinking you will do much better looking in the mid or upper 20k range. You might luck out and find a fire sale but it is not likely. I know a couple of guys who have found some very good deals considering the quality of the car and the accessories, paint, etc but it was around 25k. I wish you luck in your search. WEK.
