View Full Version : My first attempt at a hood hinge.

I decided I really wanted to have the front hood hinged. This is my attempt at it. Not sure this will be the final design, but its close. In order for the hood to open properly, the hinge pivot must be in front of the hood. This isn't possible on the 818 hood, so I cut the first 4 inches off and reattached it to the bumper I will probably have the bonded to the nose and make it one piece.

Next step was to design the hinges and the mounting point. It is loosely base on the trunk hinges for the roadster that Breeze sells.

Here are the mounting pads epoxied to the hood.

And finally the whole thing installed and working.

The hood is a bit flimsy and wobbles a lot when opened. I think if I can connect the 2 hinge arms together, it will help.

I may take the hood to a fiberglass shop and have them make an inner liner similar to what FFR does on the Roadster hood. This would stiffen it considerably. In order for it to work correctly the 90 degree bends along the long edge will need to be cut way down in height. this will make it even more unstable. The liner should help a lot.

Very nice Michael, Great Job,
I , also was thinking about reinforcing some of the fiberglass panels.

That's a great start for a prototype! I think you are right about tying the hinges together. If you put a tube between the two round ends with a rod insert and a piece of angle stock between the flat ends (welded) you would have it completely "boxed in". You might not have to have the inner liner made. From what I've seen on the threads this hood must be flimsier than the MKI roadsters were. Good luck on developing it.

Thanks,

WEK.

Very nice Mike.

A rolled edge, along the cut on both pieces, would finish the seam nicely.

I am planning a similar mod but hinge from the top radiator bar. The hinged hood will be much shorter. I'm afraid that your short front piece will vibrate at high speed.

if you use a double-hinge, you wouldnt even have to cut the front of the hood off.

Nice design, and great execution. I really like it.

Will you use piston(s) in the final design? I am not sure it would help or hurt the stability though.

Please keep us updated. Great mod!

Steve

Mike, I'm waiting for you to develop a hood hinge that will be offered to all of us, double-hinge or whatever.

^agreed

Although I'd rather not have to cut the hood.

cool, did you want it to open that way or you couldn't find a way to make it work with hinges on the back of the hood by the cowl? might since stupid, I don't have my kit yet.... :)

Seemed easier at the time yo hinge it from the front.

It needs a four-bar linkage instead of a simple pivot.
