Is there really any point of wind wings? I'm 6'3 and 230lb and don't really get the point?

They can keep some of the wind around the windshield away from the driver and passenger. I ran my roadster for awhile without and then added them when funds became available, they did make a difference to me.

Yes!!! It's like the difference between night and day. I've heard the sun visors help also. I started driving mine without last summer and I couldn't believe how much more comfortable it was when I got them installed and adjusted properly. It's like driving a motorcycle without and then with a wind screen. Ask someone who's ridden. WEK.

do you go with glass or the plastic?

I run the plastic ones from FFR and yes, they make a huge difference, when used with the sun visors.

I echo what the others said; they do make a difference. I bought mine, plus the visors, during the fall Black Friday sale FFR held a year or so ago. Half price on them. If you get the visors, be VERY careful not to hit the windshield glass with the mounting screws. You should measure carefully and possibly file (shorten) the ends. Otherwise, we'll be reading about another cracked windshield. The wings clamp on to the frame in a way not endangering the glass.

There are many that I know that have the glass wings and love them. I, in my humble opinion cannot recommend them. Yes the glass is tempered but it is not safety glass. If they break they come apart in many small pieces as the tempered glass is designed.
I would not want to be the recipient of the many small pieces of glass if something were to contact the wing and break it while driving. I can only imagine that it would wind up in your face.
A friend of mine and I were installing a set on his car and found that the mounting holes in the glass were slightly misaligned. I called Enzo and he recommended just opening the hole a bit with a glass bit.
We proceeded with that and was successful with the first one. We moved to the second one and we were almost through when the bit hung on the glass and the wing literally just exploded into thousands of pieces.
Enzo was good enough to replace it for us. I still can't believe that after this occurred and proved my theory that my friend still wanted them on his car. I am still finding pieces of glass in my shop.

I just want to pass along a bit of first hand experience with the glass wings. Your call, your decision concerning them.

Old thread, but new FFR owner...

I'm looking to buy wind wings, visors and an outside mirror. Does anyone have experience on the different brands of each that are out there? Why not go with FFR if they are designed to fit the windshield? Same for visors?

Love to hear feedback on those two items. As for the mirror, those nice (and expensive) mirrors from Breeze that mount to the wind wing arm look good.

I used FFR wind wings and the mirrors (Terry's Mirrors). I also bought the sun visors, but have decided not to install them since I have the MK4 Premium Top. I know there are other sources for the wings and other mirror choices, but I can't offer any experience with them. The FFR wings are very nice quality and easy to install.

I went a different route with the rear view mirror.

Let me know if you're interested in a brand new, never installed set of the sun visors.

Regarding side mirrors, I got the 4-inch peep mirrors from Speedway. Only $16 each, and they have worked fine for the 10k miles I have on my car. Dale Thomas told me about them years ago.

See above post for pix. Need to learn how to post pix on this forum. For $16 each, you can't go wrong.

I have the wind wings and visors and really like how they deflect the wind a bit. I'm 6'2" and 230, and they do help. For the plastic ones, be careful tightening the screws/cap nuts that hold the wings to the hinge hardware. I thought I was careful, but I apparently over-tightened and have spiderweb cracks coming from pretty much every hole. I'll replace them eventually, but if I were to do it again, I'd use a very small dab of thread locker inside the cap nut and then just screw until it makes contact/doesn't rattle. I also have the wind wing mounted mirror (I only have driver's for now), and I love it. I will get the passenger mirror at some point as well.

Papa,

I see you have the Breeze side mirrors attached to the wind wings. I also have them and planning on purchasing the premium soft top. When you install the side window curtains do the mirrors work just fine or do you need to remove them?

Jay,

Good question. I haven't installed the side curtains yet, so I don't know.

If you used thread locker (i.e. Loctite) before, that might be why they cracked/crazed. Not from over-tightening. Loctite and acrylics don't get along, and will exactly cause that kind of problem. This has been mentioned by others, and unfortunately I have personal experience. Use lock washers or maybe something like RTV as a thread locker if you think it's necessary. Never Loctite around acrylics.

That is even in the instructions IIRC.

Mine are stating to get some cracks around the edges. Florida heat and sun most likely.

Did the instructions say to use thread locker, or not use thread locker? If they did, that's unfortunate. The reaction of thread locker to acrylic is widely reported, and unfortunately I learned about it after my first set of wind wings were completely cracked and crazed around the mounting holes. Yup. Used thread locker. Several sets since on other builds with no issues. And no thread locker. This is a quote from a TDS from Permatex. One I found quickly. There are many more. "This product is not normally recommended for use on plastics (particularly thermoplastic materials where stress cracking of the plastic could result)." https://441py33rout1ptjxn2lupv31-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/tech_docs/tds/24300.pdf.

I should have been clearer. It says to use thread locker, but be very careful not to get any on the plexiglass.
