Just wanted to share a few pictures of my new Ford Racing 427 crate engine that I just received from Mike Forte. I had Mike install the Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold, Quick Fuel carb, MSD distributor, Ford Racing ignition wires, Holley mechanical fuel pump, fuel line and break in/dyno the engine.

I have to admit that the engine is not going in my MkIV but into a 1968 Mustang fastback which I am building into a Steve McQueen "Bullitt" replica. However, this would be a great engine for anyone building a FFR roadster. Small block size and weight with plenty of horsepower and torque.

I went with the X head version because of the limited/no selection of headers for my particular application. The Z heads deliver over 75 more hp but the exhaust port configuration requires different headers. I didn't want to spend $1,500 to $2,000 for custom headers and to be honest, the 445 hp is plenty.

Also wanted to thank Mike for the great service. His prices for the engine and components were better than the big warehouse vendors and his shop was able to assemble, dyno and deliver in just a few weeks.

I know this engine is going into a Mustang but the 351W headers I received from FFR for the type 65 fit the Z heads. Did you check to see that your headers didn’t work? I almost sold my FFR headers before I checked and discovered they would work on the Z heads and am wondering when header manufacturer started making headers to fit the Z heads? Either way you have a very cool engine.

Hey Bill,
From the research I had done, I knew the selection for headers that would fit the Z heads and my 68 Mustang was slim to none. I had spoken to reps at the Ford Racing pavilion at the Mustang 50th anniversary in Charlotte and he agreed that there was a poor selection of headers but commented I could have a set custom made. It's possible that there are headers available that would work and I missed them but I'm happy with the X head engine.

In the process of stripping the entire car and getting a couple coats of epoxy primer on it. Should be ready for paint in a month or so.
