View Full Version : Connecting the FE to an engine hoist

I'm preparing for the installation of my complete FE motor/Toploader transmission into my Mark IV chassis.

I have a load leveler hoist so that I can easily angle this combo into the chassis.

However, since the cylinder heads on this engine only have drilled and tapped holes on only one end face of the heads (on the left front end face where the coil mounts) and then on the REAR end face of the right side head, I'm looking for suggestions on the best place to mount the hoist chains. If the heads had tapped holes on BOTH head end surfaces, I would be set, but they don"t.

The engine has been completely set up, adjusted and run prior to my receiving it. It has the twin four barrel carbs on an aluminum intake manifold. I want to put the engine in without disassembling anything, especially the carbs, fuel log and linkages. And I am reluctant to use the intake manifold bolts because I'm concerned about the load it might put on the aluminum manifold and the chains running into carbs and other stuff when installing at an angle.

How have you guys attached the hoist chains to your motors when installing the engine trans?

I'm just looking for a method that's been proven to work. Thanks in advance!

I put a 390 FE with a C6 attached to it into a different car I was working on using the front threaded holes available on one of the heads and a longer bolt going through the opposite side top transmission bellhousing bolt. I didn't have the carb on, but basiclly the same thing you're trying to do. You should have plenty of room to replace the bellhousing bolt with the correct one after the engine is in the roadster. I don't recommend using the intake manifold bolts, although I have seen it done without incident.

John-

I don't have a good solution for you, but I wanted to wish you good luck with the heart transplant!

I also hope you will post some pictures when you are all done. I would love to see how it looks.

Best of luck.

Regards,

Steve

I have a small block but I used a bracket that attaches to the intake manifold in place of the carb. Worked great29434
