I was reading the pdf file on the 65 manual FFR sent me today. It shows using the quad shocks with the 3-link setup. I had a 3 link on my 33 kit and did not use the quad shocks. Is this a misprint or does the coupe use 4 shocks? It seems to me the manual leans more to the basic kit that uses a lot of donor mustang parts. I ordered the complete kit. Any help would be great. I am confused???:confused:

I wish FFR would have made that clearer by now. I had the same confusion when I was building my roadster several years ago. The manual was not clear at all. I called FFR and they more or less acted like I should have known better than to think I was supposed to use the quad shocks and the coil overs. Oh well. The more things change the more they stay the same! Good luck, WEK.

If I am understanding you correct I do not use the quad shocks at all with the 3-link. Is that correct. I agree the manual could use an update.

You are correct. Mine with 3 link came with separate instructions for the 3 link install.

Joe Scott at FFR confirmed do not use quads with 3-link. Thanks to all for answering.

I have the Coupe and Roadster manuals, and both are ridden with grammar errors, misinformation, outdated instructions, pictures and instructions unrelated to the kit (ie: the seat installation for the Roadster were copied and pasted onto the Coupe's manual. The Coupe seats are completely different, so those instructions are useless). Believe it or not, FFR doesn't have a set of instructions on mounting the Coupe's standard seats, so we're left on our own with this one. I have offered solutions, and even volunteered to do some major editing to these manuals. I don't think I was taken seriously.
Once I get done with my build, I'll reach Dave Smith directly about letting me fix the manuals. In the meantime, we'll keep doing what we do best on this forum: help each other. Keep calling FFR for answers, though. They're obligated to help, especially when their customers' confusions are created by their own manuals.

It's clearly stated that the manuals are meant as a guide. As a former procedure writer and technical editor, I understand that FFR does what they do best which is build a very good quality product. Step by step procedures is a different animal completely. But using the expertise of former builders as the authors of the procedures would be good. I think they are doing that more with the 818. One common thing about the procedures is you have to get someone who is not familiar with the process to screen them before final edit and distribution (while still building the procedure). That way the person developing the procedure (who usually knows the process pretty well) doesn't assume the reader already knows the simple stuff he sees every day. A test reader will come back and say, "that doesn't follow" or "there's something missing here". It is a very powerful tool!!! Many great companies fail to use it. Besides, it is labor intensive and can get expensive done in-house. So I will use the manual as it was intended and use the expertise of the forum when I feel the need. WEK.

I agree. That's why I volunteered to edit and proof-read the manual for them. They need a fresh set of eyes to fix mistakes, and further explain in detail some of the procedures that are too generalized, and could use a photo or two. Unfortunately, there are sections on the manual, which seem like they didn't even try. That would be the case with the Coupe's standard seat installation instructions. All in all, it's a pretty good manual, and a strong base on which to start the build, but it definitely needs a lot of work. I also agree that they've done a much better job with the 818 manual.

I would like to contribute with a project like that but it would have to have Dave's blessing to even consider it. So maybe you can be the point man on this since that was your plan, right? I will do whatever needs to be done to support. There is more than enough resource on this forum to complete such a task. One more thing in defense of the original manuals is that the roadster project outlived it's donor concept due to the age of the fox body donors. It has become more and more of a struggle to find a good one. So you have to buy all new or cherry pick from several donor sources. That alone is a big change from when guys were building the first cars. See ya, WEK.

Thanks! I would definitely use the expertise and experience from the people on this forum to complete the task. I'll keep you in mind, but it'll be a while. I'll be taking notes as I go through my build, and highlighting discrepancies. I have created and edited technical manuals for the military, so I'm no stranger to this. Hopefully, Dave will sign off on it.

Carlos, I too live in Apollo Beach, recently finished my Type 65 Coupe. Would like to link up and compare notes. WR-Bob
