View Full Version : MK3 3-Link Retrofit

I was checking out another member's MK4 build the other day and noticed that with the 3-link installed, his FFMetal battery box (mounted under the trunk floor) is mounted a bit off to the driver side. That's done to allow for clearance for the diagonal brace that goes behind the differential.

My battery box is mounted in the center of the trunk and my trunk is all carpeted.

I have the FFR 3-Link retrofit kit and am wondering if this can be installed without moving the battery location.

I was thinking that I could cut a section out of the diagonal brace (to clear the battery) and then weld in a replacement tube underneath the cut-out section. If the welded-in piece were long enough, would that be enough to be structurally sound? I'm not sure how much force that diagonal brace takes when the car is in action.

I'd rather not lose the location of the battery and moving the box all together doesn't seem like much of an option for me.

Got any ideas for me?

I installed my battery box to the left as far as I could get it in my MKIII. I thought that would fix the issue if I wanted some sort of 3 link/pan hard bar setup. After looking under the car on the lift with everything in place, I'm not seeing a lot of clearance even with the battery where it is. Having to modify that diagonal brace would be ify in my estimation. You could look at it as an opportunity and move the battery to the front and right where I've heard is helpful balancing the weight. Just a suggestion. Good luck, WEK.
