Blue MK3

Posted this on the other forum, but no response after numerous views. Totally unrelated to FFR and Cobras (well, I WAS driving my MK3 when I spotted this), but what's the deal with Mercedes 300SL replicas? I recently pulled off a local expressway and came to a stop at the end of the ramp behind a beautiful 300SL roadster. I followed it for a mile or so, when it turned onto a side street. I tried to wave the driver over but to no avail.

What did I see? I've read that M-B determined through the courts that replicas are illegal and many reps were destroyed, so this car may have been an original. Or were there some counterfeit (illegal) replicas that somehow slipped past M-B? I can't find much info about 300SL replicas, except a few about the 300SL Gullwing. Any ideas?

I have heard of them but never seen one …I think.
I know two guys with the real thing and from what I know of Value, they would never pull over to someone waving them down.
An original goes for about $875k today and one guy I met that let my daughter pose inside the car owns a Gullwing & a 300 roadster, needless to say he wouldn't just stop and chat if he didn't know you, his watch is worth more than anything I drive.

That's funny because I have seen a few SLs out here and they didn't look exactly the way I remember them back when I thought it was the prettiest sports car ever. I don't know if it is slightly different in proportion, the stance, ride height, or what but just different. I suppose one could be a replica. I never thought of that as a possibility but when they start going for 875K, it becomes quite feasible. It's a very classic line that catches your eye. I'll have to look more carefully next time I see one. Thanks, WEK.
