Is it necessary to crimp the connectors to the hose lines?
The connectors are barbed, but I'm not sure it they need to be crimped also.

Yes, they do. Take them to a local AC shop. They did mine in 5 minutes for $10. Be sure, though, to orient them on the car as they will be for the final install. Mark the hose and connector for proper orientation, then tape hose and connector together (so they don't get mixed up) before taking them to the shop.
