Installed 347 Stroker - Everything runs great-great smooth power going through the gears - Only crazy thing, the engine misses at around 1700-1900 rpms - any gear. Timing is set at 14 degrees and carb set via vacuum gauge (and mostly sound) (don't know total advance). Edelbrock 650. Again, no problem except when I slow down in a any gear and the engine hits that magically rpm range. I didn't build the engine and did contact the company, but was just trying to get other opinions and/or to a simple "cure" in the meantime. I only have approx. 1000 miles on motor - did change plugs/oils.
Any advise suggestion would be appreciated,

Walter

I would change carbs.

What distributor are you running, does it have vacuum advance?

Hi Walter,

Have you called Edelbrock and discussed the issue with them? They should swap out carbs if you have a lemon. If they can't or won't help you, try a different carb as Gordon suggested. Also, what did you plugs look like when you changed them? Good luck trouble shooting!

WEK.

While I am not an Edel carb fan, just throwing yours away is not my idea of a fix. I would look for someone w/ a wide band O2 sensor and display like the Innovate LM2 and find out if your engine is going lean at that rpm range. Then change jets as needed. I would also recommend that you check your total advance. I don't think it is causing your misfire, but for engine longevity it needs to be limited to 32-34 degrees.

Just to answer one question - when I pulled the plugs they were black -nothing built up on them, just black. Also, when I run the car in the garage, you definitely smell it (my wife almost has me strip before entering the house - and it's not my body) - engine is burning a little rich - I did adjust the choke to where it is better as well. Will try calling Edelbrock tomorrow, too.

With a carb engine running in the garage, even with the tune right, you're going to get some odor. When I'm doing engine tuning, my clothes are left in the garage. Direct orders.

Good luck with the Edel carb. Much discussion over on the other forum. A few get them to run OK in these cars. But generally they are not a good match. Holley or Holley clones (e.g. Quick Fuel, etc.) are the carb of choice. Good luck.

I think you have the carb sized correctly for the 347. I was fooling around with the different cfm calculators a while back. When I plugged in the numbers for a 302 and 347 they came out in the ball park for the 347 and a little at the high end for my 302 (going by what I had read about cfm per 8 cylinder cycles). BTW, those numbers vary quite a bit from source to source by my experience (heads, valves, cam, rocker arms, runner size). Therefore, you will have to go down in jet size a couple to get where you need to be. If you know someone with a wideband O2 gauge you could dial it in with that which would be the safe way to do it (don't want too lean!). However, I don't think you are going lean so you have some room to work. I would be surprised if you can't get your carb at least running decently unless like I said before you have a lemon or it has a casting issue (leaky gasket, etc....) sort of the same thing. WEK.

650 should work well.
