Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and couldn't find anything regarding my problem. I have an '89 donor car and decided to upgrade to the ffr electric gauges after 10 yrs. Problem is the instructions (to me) weren't very clear as to which wire you're supposed to splice into on the computer. I used all the manuals they suggested for reference, but I'm still unclear. I did however use my 'mantuition' and ended up with no power to the car. Anyone do this with an '89 or know the colour (yes, I'm Canadian) code and location of the actual wire you're supposed to splice into? Thanks very much in advance...

You don't splice ANY wires on the computer - none of the gauge sender wires go through the computer except the speedometer. The speedometer sender needs to be spliced into the wire from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) before it goes to the computer.

Not 100% positive if the wire color coding is the same on 89 donor harness, or not. These are the ones from my 90 GT harness.
These come from the VSS sensor which also feeds the ECM.
VSS to ECM (signal) GRN/WHT
VSS to ground PINK/YEL
I also found this info in my old build notes.
The speedo's "ground" contact can be grounded to the frame, as the VSS ground is already grounded via the ECM common ground. You can simply splice a wire from your speedo "Sig" contact, into the other VSS (GRN/WHT) wire that feeds your ECM information. This in turn will allow your speedo to process info as well. Depending on your gearing some gauge calibration may be required, to get the speedo to read correctly, or in some cases a different VSS driven gear.
HTH..

thanks for the quick reply, I'll give it a try and get back...

Hi, just wanted to double check before I start cutting again, did you splice into the VSS (grn/wht) right where it comes out of the transmission?

In my case the splice was done further up the harness towards the ECM/dash area, but either way it will still work. It's really just a matter of convenience, as to where to tap into it.
