Cool! I'd be interested in more details of your prep and paint. Is it PPG, SW or what?

Thanks,

WEK.

Looks great! Would love to know about the paint process.

Thanks for sharing your work.

I told Tony at FFR I was painting it myself and he gave me some great pointers. I started by blocking the seams with 80 grit. Body filler on all the seams. Block and checked it with my hand instead of using a tracer coat. I just like doing it that way. Blocked the rest of the car with 400. Acrylic primer, I let it cure then blocked again with 400. Used s single stage acrylic base coat (2 wet coats), kept about a pint for touch up. I'll let that cure and abride it before putting the stripe on. Probably next Tuesday. Then let that flash and put a clear coat over the whole car. Let that cure, wet sand with 2000, then buff. I also painted the inside of the body with the black.

Nice! I like the Simplified approach, I think folks get afraid of body work and paint and overcomplicate it!

Do you mind sharing what Equipment you used? Compressor size CFM? and Paint Gun?

Looking good, Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I used an oil less from harbor freight. I'll have to look at the size. I overheated it. I had to put a fan on it to keep it going. The gun is the new Eastwood gravity feed. If I paint again I'm going to get a bigger compressor and a siphon feed with a mixer. I had one long ago and loved it. I like being able to give the surface a blast of air before putting down the paint. I have 2 farm market tents duct taped together for a spray booth. On the edges of the body and cut outs I used a small paint brush just touching the edge with the flat side of the brush instead of trying to spray it so I didn't get runs. So painting total with compressor, gun, paint, sandpaper, filler came to about 5-600$ it looks amazing! I'm very happy. I actually wanted to stripe it on Mother's Day but I don't thing that will go over to well so Tuesday is looking good for that. Ill color sand the entire car so when I get the stripe on I can clear coat at the same time without sanding the stripe.

Is this the gun you used? This is the one I'm looking at, I called and they claim professional results and requires a decent garage Compressor. I have a Sears Compressor with like 5.5 CFM at 40psi and that said that is plenty... Plus these cars are so small...

I'm eating popcorn waiting to see how she turns out! hoping I can save myself 6-10K on this build and keep it in the 30k range!

May the Paint Gods be with you!

I got the Evolution. I got a few small runs and a few bits of dust in the paint but I'm wet sanding now and they're gone.:) I could buff it out now and call it done but I want the stripe. The clear coat will be bonus. When you get ready to paint let me know. I think my hardest part was picking out the paint.

Tocoti,

It's great that you are breaking down the process for us DIYers. I was wondering if you got any orange peel on your base coat?

Re compressors: I got a 20 gal from HF that does 14.55 @40, 12.35 at 100 max of 130 psi. One thing I have learned is to regulate the pressure at the compressor at about 50 psi and then step down at the gun (in line regulator) to 22 to 26 psi. What that does is reduce the velocity of the air in the line which can affect your atomizing spray at the head of the gun. (velocity and pressure not the same). I've been following a paint forum for preparation to air brushing and painting my car. What I found was that by doing the above it reduced the tendency to shoot too dry without doing anything else. I did a few other things like reduce pressure and go from 8 inches to 5 inches to spray wetter. Also, reduced the paint even more with a slow reducer which also let it lay out better. I'm dealing with very dry conditions and heat which you may not have.

Can't wait to see the strip and clear coats. Good luck,

WEK.

I think painting the car was probably the most fun part of the whole build.
I highly recommend it.

Curious what product line are you using that allows over a week of recoat window between base and clear?
