Hey,

I had a question about the new MK4 roll bar, I know they reduced the diameter down instead of the 2in.

I honestly think I like the Thicker look better, Can I still use the 2 inch roll bar on the MK4? Do I have to order an additional Roll bar or can I just change my order to the thicker bar...?

Anyone have some experience on this subject?

Thanks,

Michael

********** sells a 2 in. roll bar. I don't believe much, if any, modifications are necessary (aside from bigger holes in the body). But I'd ask them to be sure.

When the MkIV first came out I understood the thick and thin rollbars could be mounted interchangeably. The thick one goes around the mount tubes. The thin one goes inside the mount tubes. Check w/ FFR to verify my memory.

I'd recommend you to take a look at the Breeze roll bars. They're a more authentic 1-3/4 inches diamter, so not as thin as the Mk4 and not as thick as the Mk3. Slightly lowered and a slight backwards rake (like the originals) and eliminates the external joint. Does require welding and whatever finish you want. But it's a very nice option. Will fit the Mk4 mounts. He has them in driver and passenger side as well. Either plain steel or stainless. https://www.breezeautomotive.com/search.php?search=roll+bar

2 inch does not fit into the MkIV without an adapter, at least on MkIV around 7600, which mine is. I ordered a passenger roll bar and wasn't specific. Got the 2 inch and while there was an adapter included for the down leg, it would require cutting out the existing mount. Doable, but I just returned it. The Breeze kit looks like it includes adapters to make everything fit.

They MK4 smaller tubes definitely mount to the outside of the mounting tubes

I have the Breeze SS Roll Bars and really like them. The size, height, and angle are exactly what I wanted and the Stainless Steel looks good too.
Having them welded was an inconvenience (I took them to the shop to have them tacked originally, then took them off to put a nice weld all the way around), but well worth the effort in my opinion.

MPTech - Whose grommets are you using? I get that question sometimes and never really have a good answer.

I can't say which ones those are, but Russ Thompson is making them now for the 1-3/4 inch roll bar. Just got my set from him yesterday.

That looks like Russ's design.

Yes! I called Russ Thompson after I got my roll-bars and asked him. He proto-typed them for 1 3/4" and sent me a set to try.
They worked great and I really like them.

I love the trunk strut. Where did you get that from?

Replica Parts. Scroll down the page for the MK4 struts, as pictured above: http://www.replicaparts.com/new%20style%20trun%20support%20kit%20page.htm

Thank you. Can these be installed with the body on?

Yes. That's the only possible way to install. No matter whether the FFR supplied bars or the Breeze bars. All install after the body is in place. Trial fit and get adjusted with the body off, but final installation is after.

Thank you. I will place the order tonight. It just looks like a difficult install with the body on. Are there tricks? I have a 45 deg drill motor. are there any other special tools? how long did the install take?

Thank you

This is a long thread, but lots of pictures and explanations about how the Breeze bars are designed and installed. http://www.ffcars.com/forums/17-factory-five-roadsters/287655-roll-bar-genius.html

I don't know about the FFR bars, but the Breeze bars would almost have to be drilled before the body is on.
My suggestion would be to install, drill, and weld the Breeze bars before installing the body is installed.
(and buy some REALLY good bits for drilling the bolt holes in the Stainless steel, I tried starting with smaller bits and stepping up to the final size, but ended up burning two bits beyond any further use!).
