Is there any problem with heat from the headers right next to powder coated aluminum panels? I know the process of applying powder coating involves heat, but does the stuff fair ok when its close to intense heat?

Is it best to install a heat shield near the headers? I saw one guy here installed a second panel with a gap inbetween.

Thanks
Ian

If there is reasonable air space, you shouldn't have any trouble. Some guys paint the panels with rattle can or automotive paint and don't have issues. Regular powder coat (e.g. not high temp variety) is good for about 300 F (or about 150 C in your world). More than many paint products. The silver powder coat on my Mk3 still looks brand new after 3 seasons. I think the panels guys are installing are to prevent heat from radiating through into the cockpit. I personally haven't found them necessary. Good heat and sound proofing on the cockpit side has been more than adequate for my Mk3. Used Lizard Skin and don't get any heat from the panels with a small block. Did the same on the Mk4 build.

I powdercoated my intake and valve covers, and they've help up fine. I can't image the panels would get nearly as hot as engine parts.

Thanks Ed & Pete.

I fancied silver panels too. The aluminum looks great when new, but it quickly fades.

I have not seen any problems with mine.
