View Full Version : getting Ready, Chassis Dolly and Body Buck Plans?

So my MK4 will arrive in late June but want to be ready.

I need to do two things:

1 - Build a Chassis Dolly - I have seen a few posts but some have issues with brake line install...etc Has anyone figured out plans/Materials for the perfect Chassis Dolly?

2 - I need to build a body buck. All I plan to do is hang it from the ceiling of garage.

Are there plans or Cad Drawings for any of these?

I apologize if this is a Dead horse... I did not find much in my searches. Lets kick it again...

Thanks, Michael

I can't speak to the quality of any of these body buck plans, but here are a couple:

http://www.ffcars.com/FAQ/bodybuck02.html
http://www.ffcars.com/forums/attachments/factory-five-roadsters/19784d1292715654-body-buck-mk4-stans-revised-body-buck.pdf

Apparently the second, "Stan's" plan is preferred.

A chassis dolly is fine. But it's not required IMO. Jack stands work fine too. Just make sure to pad them especially if you have powder coating on your chassis. I've done both of my builds with jack stands. I put them up as high as I can with the floor jacks I have. Doesn't have the mobility of a chassis dolly. But usually the first steps are to install the front and rear suspensions, then with the wheels/tires on, you can roll around on wheel dollies if that's what you need. You won't use the chassis dolly once the car is done. Jack stands and wheel dollies you can use all the time.

Good luck with your build! You're about to start a great adventure. I enjoy the driving a ton, but for me the build is a blast too.

Very good point! I like where your heads at! Yea I already have Jack Stands, So I think I'll put suspension on and pick up some Wheel Dollies! then just roll it around as needed!

Thanks! just saved some lumber and time!

These should do the trick!

That's what I do: wheel dollies normally, and jack stands when I have to work under the car.

Mike,

If you want to hang it from the ceiling, Laser Stan either on this Forum or the "Other One", has a great setup. I sent him a PM today for more detail information. He has great pictures. It looks real simple and saves a lot of room.

Has anybody thought about buying a scissor jack to do the build, like the mid-rise ones from BendPak? Especially with middle aged bones, seems like it would be nice to have everything at about waist height, and fully adjustable. Big investment, but I've been thinking about doing one for my shop anyway. Thoughts?

There was a group by of the new scissor jack from BendPac that just concluded. I am using one as I refurbish my roadster and finishing the 33 Hot Rod will follow. They work great for me.

To build a roadster, do you think a scissor lift would be better or a 2-post lift?

Mike:

This is what I'm using for a car dolly. It's from a small company called Uni-Dolly, it's height and width adjustable, and you can get it with different attachment to fit your application. The slim design makes it almost non-intrusive, and when you're done with it, it takes only a few seconds to dismantle and put on a shelf.

I do have wheel dollies, but I'm using one for the tranny, and the other has a special attachment dedicated for engines, which mine is currently sitting on.

The problem I found with using the wheel dollies for their intended use, is that you don't have enough clearance to work under the car. I personally didn't want to keep switching between jacks and dollies. I can keep my dolly under the car for virtually the whole build, while having the mobility to move the car, and the room to work underneath it.

I have built a dolly and adapted it for a couple different cars. Easy to make in an afternoon. Even used it to haul it on/off trailer.

I have the bendpak MD6-XP...didn't buy it for my upcoming build, but I'm certainly going to use it. I think it'll be great. Not sure I'll be able to drop the engine/tranny in with it on the lift due to clearance issues under the center of the car, but it'll be great for everything else.

Another alternative is the "raised" body buck. I built one for our build back in 2005. It's essentially the FFR body buck on legs with casters and you can roll it OVER the chassis. I also added shelves for my kit hardware/boxes making it pretty much self contained except for the seat and side pipe boxes. I would roll the raised buck out and work on the chassis, then, once the chassis was a roller I would leave the buck in the garage and roll the chassis out from under it to work on it in the driveway.

Mark,
Do you have any diagrams or plans for yours?

I saw "rc-tech" and thought it was one of my fav RC (radio control) websites I visit, then realized you have a hyphen in yours. But I forgave you for the misleading URL when I saw the push button Pantera! I love those first year hand built versions! Very jealous!

Oh, sorry, forgot to comment on Mentabasher's question. Yes, first link in post #2 has great details on the raised body buck option. Here are a few pics of mine. It went to a builder in Orlando but never heard if he finished his car or what. It would be kind of cool to find out where it is and how many people have used it.

Michael,
I guess it all boils back to budget and space. All you really need is a good floor jack, jack stands and wheel dollies.
For me I wanted the body out of the way completly. I simply suspended it under my rear deck and forgot about it until the time came for body fitment.
As far as a dolly goes why buy something you will never use again. I already had a set of wheel dollies and jack stands from my Mustang build. All I did was take some plywood and make a platformto put on the dollies for the jack stands to sit on. The underside has a perimetre stop and the top side has a frame for the jack stand to fit into. This will make your chassis mobile right from the get go. Once the suspension is on toss the platforms and continue using the dollies.

Andy

Thanks Mark, I used to have it set up as an R/C web site.

Gotcha, that makes more sense then when you look at it. There's a HUGE R/C site, www.rctech.net that I hang out at and thought it was one in the same until I clicked through...

If you're into touring cars at all you should get one of HPI's Pantera bodies and paint it to match!

Back to our regularly scheduled thread discussion... :D

What made you go with a scissor lift instead of a two-post lift?

I saw a U-Tube video of from a shop where they had built a "rotisserie" using 2 engine stands. They had a long 2x4 tying the engine stand front legs together and then had boards across the rotating faces of the stands to mount the chassis to. I couldn't tell exactly how the chassis was attached, maybe some u-bouts. Looked quick and easy. Sorry I didn't get the link.

Michael, that is great to see there is an upcoming Katy build. I am a Katy-ite as well, live off of S. Fry. What part of town are you in?

By the way, that is one nice garage you have there.
