Started installing the steering shaft and ran into a little problem. I am pretty sure the split bearing needs both sides sandwiched together and mounted to the foot box from the outside. When I do that the shaft seems to long and won't allow me to slide the coupling over the rack spline. The universal joint hits the bearing and won't allow it to move far enough to get the shaft over the spline on the rack. If I split the bearing apart and mount the back half on the inside I can get it together, but the bearing is too loose and not correct. It as if I need to shorten the spline shaft on the rack to allow a little more distance.

Anyone else have an issue? the pictures show it assembled, but with the bearing split with the back half on the inside which I am about 99% sure is wrong.

Try turning the bearing around so the set screw is on the inside. If you still don't have enough space then try mounting both halves of the bearing retainer on the inside.

Good Luck

Thanks. That fixed the problem. That's what I get for following the picture in the book.
