I'm sure there is a very good reason why no one is suggesting this, but:

Instead of a heater, why not just install a vent in the footbox to the engine compartment that can be opened or closed? It could be similar to the transmission tunnel vents that some use instead of a fresh air blowing system. Obviously it couldn't be just a typical air vent because you'd need to to close completely and even be insulated to keep heat out in the summer, but it seems like a simple and elegant solution.

Where am I going wrong?

I don't want engine fumes in the cockpit. A good way to get free warm air, though.

2nd issue would be in the unlikely (but very dangerous) event of an engine fire, you've just given it an instant path to catch the carpet and your legs on fire.

(I liked this idea also, but the above was pointed out in another thread, so I ruled it out right away).
