Buying a used transmission

Any tips on inspecting a used transmission? I'm picking up a spare tonight from a wrx for fairly cheap. Any easy way to know if it's toast?

Sorry about that, But better to late than never.
Put it in each gear and rotate the input shaft a few times around. Should turn smoothly.
Check oil for burnt smell and metal flakes.
