View Full Version : Lambo doors?

Probably not a high priority for anyone, but just for the fun of discussing about that, anyone thought of installing a Lambo doors universal kit on their 818? Would it look easier than other cars (other kit cars or other normal cars like Mazda Miata, Ford, etc.)?

I think it will be more difficult. Factory cars typically have the door being flush to the windshield. The 818 door tucks inside the fender and under the windshield frame. You'd need to have a mechanism that swings out quite a bit and then up (more like a koenigsegg than a lambo).

One mechanism you'll design and CNC machine? lolll

Yeah, I thought of those doors, but not sure there is a kit, at a reasonable price, for such dihedral synchro-helix actuation doors. :)

The doors have to first pivot out of the opening in a way that clears the frame, then swing up. Unless the car was designed from the beginning to do it, there will be issues with the door opening where bodywork will interfere with it rising vertically. That's why kits are designed to swing it out slightly to clear, then up. It becomes an exercise in creating compound action hinges. And car doors aren't necessarily light with integral door bars in them, much less glass. There's a lot of leverage on them which requires strength, and strength requires either high tensile alloys or mass. In either case the hinge mechanism will likely be a lot heavier, and on these cars we already have people counting the grams they can pare off.

Functionally, all it does is allow the door to rise in a vertical arc - which implies there's no room for it to swing open, and that then asks how does the driver still get out if they are that close to an obstacle? In the day, driving convertibles and roadsters, we went out over the trunk in that situation. Lambo doors wouldn't have helped.

I leave it to others to discuss the "show car" merits.

All of those "Lambo Door" Kits for production cars do not change the way the doors close/latch. All they do is put a horizontal hinge onto a vertical hinge. So you still open the door out like you normally would, but only 6-10", then you lift the door up into it's vertical position.

To close the door, you pull the door down, then pull it in to latch to the factory latch mechinism.

They are pretty lame if you ask me.

However, you could easily adapt one to work on an 818
