View Full Version : where to mount coil and starter solinoid
I'm building roadster with an 89 mustang donor and need to know where the best place to mount the coil and starter solinoid would be.

I mounted my coil on the engine and the starter solenoid on the firewall in my first Roadter. Planning the same thing for this build

I have built five now and I always mount them on the firewall. The latest one has A/C and there is still room.

Coil on front of driver's side head, solenoid on firewall. No problems in almost 20,000 miles.

The wire harness kind of determine that. You say donor, does that include the donor harness? If so you won't have much choice where to put the solenoid. Otherwise, I like the solenoid on the firewall passenger side. It is much less in the way there since it is tucked back in under the body.

Mounted mine 90 degrees off of distributor and on the top frame rail:

I am using a Ron Francis harness so the wire group for the solenoid will have to go either on driver foot box or firewall, I noticed on another thread that it needed to be grounded through the mount.

I made a plate to mount my donor coil to the front of the passenger cylinder head and the donor solenoid to the engine mount close to the starter. The Ron Francis wiring harness worked well with these placements.

I mounted my coil on the drivers side front head and the solenoid on the passenger side motor mount bracket near the starter.

My coil is mounted on the square tube near the F-Panel. Pretty much a straight run over to the top of the distributor from there.
I made a panel to hold the coil and the remote reservoirs for the brake fluid. If I were starting over, I would opt for the firewall though. Would prefer it to be hidden.

I am installing a heater and wipers so on the firewall would need to be on the drivers side, my lead for the solenoid is not near long enough to go to a motor mount.
Thanks for all the input it has helped a lot.

I mounted the coil on the top of thre passenger footbox and the solenoid on the firewall, passenger side. See attached progress photo. Ran 3800 miles since completion with no problems.27257
