Made progress this morning, hooked up my garage remote to the button originally designed for the horn. While this may be simple to some of you, a major accomplishment for me. Learning so much working on this project. Mark

That's something I would not have thought of. I can see advantage right away. You will never misplace that remote which seems to get lost in my roadster every time I take it with me. So did you just use the two wires from the button and hook them into the horn button circuit? Did you mount the remote under the dash so you can use the other remote features? Anyway that's pretty clever, I think. Thanks for sharing, WEK.

Just soldered wires to the button, made reliefs in the plastic case and ran wires to the horn button. Yes, the remote is mounted under the dash. First ever soldering to to a circuit board.

That is a really smart idea. One for the list of mods.

Thanks!

I built mine in. I have two garage doors. What I did was take the guts out of the remote and made an aluminum bracket and mounted it behind the dash. I bought a 12v - 9v converter and put that in the circuit so I never have to change batteries. Buttons are on my under dash panel. I did find that I had to drill a hole in the bracket. It was shielding the transmitter chip.

I have a radar detector power supply / remote control under there also. Two more buttons on the under dash panel (power and mute/volume). Also a crazy bright LED that I built into a blue high beam light housing. I figure chances of me hearing it are slim.

These small mods are fun and very useful.

Great idea using the converter, may have to adapt to that. You know if they sell adapters that go from 12v to what ever the small flat batteries are. Fortunately I don't need the radar detector.

I haven't done this, but have seen a couple of guys buy the sunvisors out of a newer car that have the "Homelink" or whatever Ford/GM/Others call it built into the visor. (Buying from a wrecker or ebay). They just remove the electronics and then incorporate that panel into the car. Just another option

Great idea Slider, I read that last night and rushed out to the junk yard this morning. Pulled a visor out of a Grand Cherokee. I took the unit out of the visor with the idea of mounting it behind the dash. I wanted to test it first, so I Googled how to program it for the Jeep, hooked it up to temp power and it programed it just like the directions said. All the right light flashes and everything. But when I tested it, it didn't work:confused: Cleared the programing and tried again (3 times) and still nothing. Guess it is back to the junk yard to try again.:(

I look forward to hearing if you get it working. I really liked the idea when I first heard of it, and it looked good in the cars of the friends who did it.

I'll throw another idea out... this is the one I actually ended up using. Get ready... it's very high tech... I took a normal remote for my openers (as my DD's have built in controls I have 4 extras floating around). I took one side of a velcro strip and placed it on the back of the remote, and the other accompanying side on the back of the dash out of sight. I then took the remote, and stuck it to the strip of velcro behind the dash. When I pull into the driveway, I reach up under the dash (left of the steering wheel) and push the button on the remote. (sorry for the detailed instructions:rolleyes:) Nobody ever sees the remote, and it's always where I need it, when I need it. I like the idea of built in stuff, but this one was just too easy, and worked too well, to justify trying something more difficult (imho). I know you can even purchase keychain size remotes, which would be even simpler to stick to the back of the dash. $20, velcro strip 1" long, 45 seconds and it's all done!

Slider, that's crazy talk! C'mon, something that easy? No way!

Actually, I liked hearing about everyone's ideas as they all help me narrow down the decision for mine. Thanks for sharing your elegant solution!

Regards,

Steve
