My daughter wants to rebuild a 1970-1976 Ranchero with me, so we're searching craigslist for a suitable one. I'm pretty sure we'll need to rebuild the engine in whatever we buy. I'm guessing we'll end up with a 302 or 351. We'll probably restore the car (and engine) to stock, so I'm not looking for crazy upgrades or modifications.

What are good books to guide us through the engine re-build?

The standard book has been for many years, "How to Rebuild Your Small Block Ford", by Tom Monroe. The book has been around forever, but it's very useful to identify what you'll see when you tear apart an old engine, and how to put it back together.

Another book that is helpful is "Small Block Ford Engines" from Hot Rod magazine. A collection of articles from the magazine that discuss both stock and hot rod engines.

Well I just rebuilt a 302 a few months ago and I had a bunch of those books but the best thing was this video..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/How-to-Rebuild-your-Ford-5-0-289-302-351W-393-Engine-Video-Manual-DVD-/380860954707?pt=Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item58ad14f853&vxp=mtr

Shesh..this is actually the second video I've recommended tonight from ebay. It is a good video though..step by step rebuilding a 351/302

Thanks for the replies. We are going to purchase a 1966 Ranchero. It has a 200 ci straight 6.

Any leads on an engine rebuild book for the old Ford straight 6 (including the carb)?
