Some people expressed interest in some of the parts I made for my 818 build. I'd like to see how many would be interested in these parts before I commit to a vendor subscription.

1. Steering Column Spacer: $50

I'll buy the Steering Column Spacer, for sure.
Maybe buy the shifter parts - if I decide to get the K-Tuned shifter. Trying FFR shifter first.

Likely in for the shift rod arm and bracket.

I'd like to see a few specs or bits of info on it first - like how much room does it save you over stock, do you have to modify the trans rod, can it be mounted facing down?
Let us know.

No, the ball joint for the push/pull cable would be on the wrong side. The FFR instructions also have you bend their bracket back towards the front of the car because of the angle that the input shaft comes out of the transmission; that wouldn't be possible with this one and it would be pointing out towards the rear of the car.

OK, could you simply make a second version that had that threaded hole on the other side so that it would work with the FFR cable? I think I can take care of the bend with a vise and a hammer.

Be careful, 6061 aluminum doesn't like to bend. It likes to crack and break. I'm not sure how important it is to straighten it out anyways. The angle or rotation isn't very much so the change in Y (front to back of car) isn't much.

This is why I would not try to bend it, I would expect it to break also. I don't know if the clearance is important or not as I am not using the FFR supplied shifter. It should be easy enough to create the part in a mirror image, I just can't test it out to see if there are any unforeseen issues.

Also this would require a new bracket for the push/pull cable that would need to be compatible with the existing FFR bracket or replace it altogether.

Frank, I believe that spacer allows you to press the collapsible column down 2.5" or so and still mount it using the factory mounting holes.

without a bracket like this you only can shorten the column about an inch and redrill holes, and use the FFR provided spacers. after that you run out of bracket.

Goldwing
03-12-2014, 08:13 PM
It seems to me that mounting the shift arm closer as in the above shift arm would be similar to using FFR's setup with the bend. I guess I'm having trouble seeing why your shift lever wouldn't work after tapping the other link on the other side? Just trying to understand.

I don't think the fork selector cable will be the problem; The bracket would be for the push/pull cable. The mounting point for the end of that cable is moved forward 40mm. The mounting point for the cable sheath would need to be moved forward also.

This piece is completely optional. You have to modify the FFR bracket when using a k-tuned shifter. You have to further modify it when using my shift arm. My bracket will completely eliminate the FFR supplied bracket. You will use my bracket along with the bracket provided with the k-tuned shifter. As an added benefit I am correcting the geometry so that the cable is mounted in parallel with the shift rod for the most efficient operation.

Ah, I think I see now. I just got to this step in my build and starting to understand it. I'd have to look at the FFR cable sheath bracket more closely, but could your shift lever work with FFR's setup if one were to redrill holes to mount the cable sheath bracket 40 mm forward? Or, and this may be the same thing, use the rear most hole in the forward tranny bolt location, then drill a new rear hole? Though, a reversed machining might line up better for the fork selector.

Yes, I ordered 15 steering column spacers today. They are 22 business days out. I will order shift arms tomorrow. I will sign up as a vendor when the parts arrive and I start asking for money. :D

This is exactly how you would modify it for use with the k-tuned shifter after you cut off the mount for the fork selector cable. The problem with doing this using the stock FFR shifter is that you would also be moving the mount for the fork selector cable forward 40mm. If someone wants to be the guinea pig for that product and has the $$$ up front for a one-off part then send me a PM and I think I have an idea how we can make it happen and hopefully make them available for everyone. Otherwise I am not really interested in pursuing that avenue myself as it would require designing and testing parts that I can't test myself.

Mounted with the supplied bracket from Waynes K-tuned kit:

http://i.imgur.com/oKQLlAG.jpgIt would be nice if you could re-do that big clunky bracket. I wonder how short a throw you can have? Does the bottom hole work without making for too much effort at the shifter? Could this area get "condensed"? It could all be tight to the housing if a bellcrank were employed.

Agree 100%. stack the two cables with a single bracket, add a small platform and a bellcrank to the rear plate. the whole arm could be flipped down if the bellcrank was hooked up to reverse the throw. simple. i guess i'll have to try it when my kit arrives in August...

Did I see some where that your shifter hardware only works with the KTune shifter or will the they work with the shifter box and cables supplied from FFR?

Rori,

Did I see some where that your shifter hardware only works with the KTune shifter or will the they work with the shifter box and cables supplied from FFR?

I have only tested it with the K-tuned parts. I no longer have the FFR bracket to even test it with. It would probably work if you pointed the arm down and flipped it around, but because you can't bend the arm like you are instructed to with the FFR arm it may negate any clearance that you were hoping to gain.

Most of the frames I've seen, the radiator isn't high enough so the steering rack bellows rubs the coolant hose line. Some people have made their own spacers to move the radiator up so it doesn't rub. Rori has a nice solution that is simple but effective.
