That's a really cool car show. Your car is going generate a ton of attention there.

Have fun.

Saw it at the show yesterday. First time I've seen a GTM in person. Looks great! Took these two shots:

Also congrats! What place and what class was it judged in? Inquisitive minds need to know...

First Place, but I don't know which class.

For all I know it could be "Best in Show that is owned by an ex-Chippendale dancer"

So are you telling on yourself or just suggesting they have a lot of award classes at the Autorama show? I suspect the right answer is the second one. It does take about 3 hours to hand them all out, and they go really fast. I would be curious if you were in "Handbuilt Sports." That's where they put my Roadster last year.

That's pretty cool, I always wondered how a new car would do at a hot rod show. The old timers don't like to see new cars win. Or maybe I just don't know what shows up at a hot rod show. I'm used to going to the tuner shows.
To bad you weren't able to go.

you should post a video, I would like to hear that thing run.

Hey Gary!

Great Job. A win is a win as they say.

Hopefully we will have some warm weather around here and the GTMX can shred some of that free rubber you have on the car.

The car looks great. Congratulations.

Your right, it is sick! Motor is out being rebuilt after just around 15 miles of use.

First Gene and now You. makes me think real hard about just ordering a crate from GM. having to pull and rebuild soon after installing really stinks.

Doing it again, I would, or just buy a good used motor. Every time I put out big bucks into a "new" motor it turns into a nightmare. As far as ease of pulling it out? By the time it came out I was ready to stab a basket full of kittens!

Or, buying a motor for cheap and plan on building it.

Hey Gary, I love the splitter braces, could you point me to where you got them?
What a bummer about your motor, frickin cars.

That's what I bought, a cheap used motor that luckily I discovered had water in two of the cylinders. So I went ahead and hard it bored and added new wiseco pistons, stronger rods, HP Oil pump, fresh valve job, LS9 cam, etc, etc. The Engine builder is trying to blame me for not somehow bringing up the oil pressure BEFORE the initial starting.

Splitter braces I got from Carbon creations. Be warned though, I'm scared that if I hit the splitter it's going to carry the damage into the nose.

You can't do that with a gear drivin pump, can you? I preasure fed the motor threw the bypass near the filter. I got just over a quart in it before I saw it come out the drain hole. My builder didn't think it was necassary, he said theese pumps start pumping at cranking.

Good point about the braces.

Always a good idea to get oil pressure before starting, especially on the first start. I just put an engine in that I did not build and so I not only got oil pressure before starting, but used some fresh oil I had from one of the crate engines to flush the engine out. So the chain of events was...

1) Put in flush oil.
2) Get oil pressure and then circulate the oil through with a drill motor while revolving the rotating assembly with a wrench on the front crank bolt. Of course the plugs are removed so you can turn it.
3) Change the oil to BR30 break in oil.
4) Get pressure with the drill.
5) Drop in the distributor.
6) Get oil pressure by cranking with starter.
7) Reinstall plugs and fire it up.

THEN...

8) Rev the engine between 2000 and 2500 constantly for 30 minutes.
9) Drive the car with engine RPM below 3500 for 500 miles.
10) Change oil to a nice synthetic and drive as "normal".

It's definitely a process, and before all that, using a good assembly lube is a must. Engines usually have a problem in the first 30 minutes of running, or go for a LONG time. Getting oil pressure before starting is probably THE most important thing you can do to make sure the engine doesn't have problems in the first 30 minutes of running.

With the LS oil pump setup, you should be good with doing steps 6-10 if a good assembly lube was used. I would still recommend using the BR30 though.

Problem is Crash, with out having a distributor on the LS motor, how do I get the oil pressure up before starting it?

You can buy a custom pre oiler for ls engines that feed an oil galley, or you can kill the fire to the engine (remove ignition & fuel pump fuse) and turn engine over with the starter to pre oil before actually starting. I'm with Crash on the break in oil.

every time we change the oil in the PDG car, we pre prime for pressure. Fill the oil filter with new oil. Disconnect the fuel pump (we have a switch to disable the pump) If you just disconnect the coils (no fire), the fuel continues into the cylinders and washes them. Turn the motor over until the red light goes out or until you see pressure. Then activate your fuel pump and good to go! Filling the filter before installing takes the load off the starter and the battery.

Cheers
Richard

I made my own, a home depot weed sprayer. Tapped a plate for the galley, worked well.

For Pre Oiling my engine I used a drill motor powered pump with 1" tubing on both ends (less than $15). I connected the pressure side to the center port of the oil filter mount with hose clamps. I put the suction side into the oil container. I took the drain plug out of the oil pan (dry sump) as not to overfill. I got 40psi from that setup. I then disconnected the fuel pump, replaced the drain plug, added the correct amount of oil, took the plugs out, and hit the starter button. The oil pressure came right up.

Here is a little tip you can use for pre-oiling. Install a separate switch in the ignition-on power circuit to the ECM. Just turn that switch off while you are cranking the engine, till you see oil pressure. Added benefit, you can hide the switch for a security kill switch.

Motor is back in with serious attention given to prelubing (even had flashbacks to my previous career as "father Erection" when I appeared in "Nuns in Hot Leather). Seems to be running fine with 55 psi oil pressure so all that's left is reinstall the rear hatch and wing. With some help tomorrow night setting the hatch and nose back on I should be able to road test it again.
