View Full Version : Track Video from Texas Cobra Club Spring Meet
We had a great Texas Cobra Club Spring Meet in San Marcos this past weekend. I don't know the final tally of how many attended, but it was a big parking lot full of snakes!
I recently purchased a GoPro HD Hero camera, so I thought I would share some of my track video from the Spring Meet Track Day. I've only been on a track a few times, so don't laugh too hard, I'm still learning! :) I almost lost it at 8:39 in the first video! It was some major fun!

Nice videos! Did you guys rent the track for the day?
I was really surprised at the lack of safety gear. The groups I run with require firesuit and gloves, full face helmet, arm restraints and there are actually corner workers in those flag stations.
Glad you had a good time

Yes, the track was rented for the afternoon.
Minimal safety gear was "required" for this track. You pay your money and you take your chances I guess. If I keep running my car on the track I expect that I will be getting more safety related gear at some point. Keep in mind this wasn't "racing". It was point to pass and was really all about testing, tuning and learning your car.
They required:
Roll Bar; Frame Mount & Functional
Lap & Shoulder Belts
Helmet; SA2000 or Better
Clothing; Long Sleeve, Long Pants
Fire Extinguisher (Optional); Metal Mount if Equipped
Drive Shaft Safety Hoop
Shatterproof Bellhousing

Fun stuff Joe :D Now you've got me anxious for our track time to start for the year!
I could see you altering and improving your line with more laps---good job! The guy in the white car needs a set of mirrors:rolleyes:. So, how about those new brakes and gears?
Jeff
Awesome Joe
Looks like you guys had a great time.
Just FYI, I'm getting mine ready for 3 track opportunities this summer.
All the best

Just a word of warning.. Don't try it, unless you're prepared to keep doing it. One time and you will probably be hooked!

Thanks Jeff, yeah it all seemed to get better after I almost ran off the track during the second session. The rear 3.55 gears are GREAT! The rear disk brakes, not so much.. As you could probably hear on the video, I still had some brake moan during some high-G turns. I thought I had it taken care of during my street testing, but it showed up really fast on the track. I put in some Hawk HP rear pads and they did seem to perform better than drums, but I still need more rear braking. I'll get it figured out eventually..

Good to hear from you Al. Are you going to make it over to LCS this year? I will hopefully be there and look forward to seeing you if you make it.
Great video. 1st time outs are really the best because you seem to learn so much. Your car appears to be tight or "pushing". Were you on stock tires or sticky's? I got mone to drive pretty neutral, with no sway bars, by scaling it and adjusting corner weights and with air pressure. I'm sure your already ticking on what to do next to make it better. For brakes I used a high performance street compound on the front and a full race compound on the rear with no bias and it would squat and stop after they were hot. Have fun and stay safe!

You got that right and it's a slippery slope with the upgrades! As my friends tell me "you could have picked a cheaper hobby!"

I was running rock hard Sumitomos. Good long lasting street tire, not so much good on the track IMHO. Some Nittos or Kuhmos will be in my future. I definitly felt like I had to ease it into the corners and then just hang there until I could see my way out, if that makes any sense at all..
Joe, Makes all kinds of sense. Sumi's don't stick even when they're new. Put you some good tires on there and go at it again. It will be twice as much fun!

Joe,
You looked really good. I didn't get there until 2 pm or a little later. By then I think you had the track figured out. You were running pretty hard from what I saw. I am having computer issues and can't see the video, so I'm glad I was there. Maybe next year I can do the track. Do you really have to have a drive shaft loop and scattershield to run there? The guy I talked to up on the tower didn't mention either of them. If so I have a bunch of things to change besides my 9 year old tires and alignment.

Great video, Joe! It was good to see you run on the track. We had atleast 100 cars this year and raised about 10K for Operation Comfort. The wounded soldiers appreciate everything we did for them.
I agree about the Sumi's, rock hard, even somewhat dangerous on the street since you can't get too carried away in 2nd gear.
Glad you got home safe. See ya next year!

Thanks Tom and Steve! Thanks for all of the work you guys put into making the Spring Meet a huge success! Someone needs to post a bunch of photos of the full parking lot of roadsters, along with the Backdraft dealer set up. It would be great if we could get Factory Five Racing to drive their rig down to the event one of these years! Are you listening Dave?? :) See you in a couple of months!

I run 275-40-17 V710's all around on 9" wide Cobra R's. Whole new learning curve after sliding around on BFG's. The Kuhmo's don't announce themselves as much before they take off and it's at a much higher g-load, so it gets to be a handfull quickly. I'm still not used to them but getting quicker all the time.
