I could use some advice. When I installed the axles on the coupe, they didn't click in. At the time, I had no clue that anything was supposed to click. A recent thread arose talking about the axles and I realized there is a C clip and it's supposed to make an actual "click" when you get the axles in properly. I did some research and it appears this is somewhat common and most guys grind down 1/8" and then get the "click". I called Factory Five this morning and they said the knuckles will hold the axles in and it should be fine even without a click. I really want to believe that so I don't have to dismantle everything, but it seems like there is a reason for the c clip and the groove and the click. I've also read that people have had issues with the axle being too short and falling out. That seems like a bad thing. So, what is the consensus? Do I grind and hope for the click or do I assume Factory Five is correct and leave it the way it is? Thanks in advance for not laughing too loudly at my lack of knowledge and for your advice.

Grind them so they will click. Allowing the inner stub axle to be able to walk is a bad thing.

Is there any chance that I'll grind them and then they'll be too short and fall out somehow? I guess the key is probably to measure something somewhere to get an idea how much to grind off, but I don't know what that something or that somewhere is. Mike may know, but since he isn't here with me, I'm going to ask all the dumb questions here in public.

Julie

I do believe this was discussed quite profoundly on either this or the other forum in another thread. I didn't pay much attention as I don't have IRS, but do remember the subject. You might initiate a search or maybe someone who remembers or was involved can lead you to the answer. Don't want you losing your wheels!!! LOL

Julie, I just looked over at the other forum and discovered that they are removing 1/8" from the end of the axel. There are some reference photo's as well so you will probably want to look at those before you start grinding.

Thanks! I saw that 1/8" thing as well and I also looked at photos. I just feel so torn because FF says it's fine, but I'm not 100% certain it is and I don't want to do the wrong thing. This car building stuff is hard. :)

You choice is believe the guys behind the desk or the guys that work on them for a living.

I guess I'll be doing a little more research on the problem to make sure I know exactly what needs to be done and then attempting to grind mine down. Thanks!

You choice is believe the guys behind the desk or the guys that work on them for a living. But Gordon, technically they do work on them for a living? LOL.

I think it would probably be OK without grinding it. However there is a reason why that function is built in. Plus the idea of that axle sliding in and out slapping the carrier is not too appealing to me.

Mr and Mrs QSL -
I have the F5R IRS from the complete kit - and my axles were backordered for several months. After my purchase, I saw all the traffic about the scary axles pulling out of the center pumpkin. I lost a lot of sleep over that, and wondered if I made the right choice.

BUT - I think those posts applied to the Gen 1 Coupe, not the Gen 2 Coupes we have (red gel coat body and round tube chassis). They clicked right in. My - er - the Coupe's rear end is from the Lincoln.

Here's a post on my rear end: http://wayneyoshida-kh6wz.com/2013/02/24/type-65-coupe-update-plus-a-new-antenna/

But did you have custom parts for your rear end?

Cobrakai also had a problem with getting wrong parts shipped from The Factory recently - I think things worked out for him.

Show us some pictures of your rear end and axles and it might help us figure out what's up. Maybe others can share some measurements.

Here is a link to the best solution I have found. It doesn’t grind any off the end. It is post #1071. I haven’t tried it yet but I am as soon as I am allowed to lift more than 25 pounds and will check back with the results.

Better to be safe than sorry!! Funny it didn't click like it is supposed to.

I think the word 'click' may be a little off in this context. The noise, if any, is not always so obvious. To me it's more of a feel thing than a hearing thing but that could be due to my 65 year old ears too.
