View Full Version : Turn signals
Well the coupe hasn't taken her first breath yet but she did blink at me tonight. One thing that annoyed me about my roadster was forgetting to turn off the turn signals. Inevitably I would see the guy behind me holding his hand up doing the blinky sign and sure enough my signals would still be on. Another thing I want to do is a removable steering wheel and from what I've read the VW switch won't fit. I sat down and thought of different ways to accomplish this and recalled using latching relays when I was in the car audio business. Two of these circuits with the four relay setup for brakes/hazzards. When I had the circuit figured out I couldn't put that many full size SPDT relays behind the dash without a serious rats nest of wires. Jump back further when I was a kid playing with making printed circuit boards from Radio Shack and I had my idea hatched. Here's the box I designed to do this followed by videos of it in operation. I still have to get a proper enclosure for it.

Way cool, Tim! And yes, I've been the subject of the dreaded "hand signal" more than once!

Tim, how do the relays address the turn signal cancelation (or lack of cancelation) issue?
Tim, how do the relays address the turn signal cancelation (or lack of cancelation) issue?
The latching circuit uses a negative pulse to latch/unlatch. The toggle does the latch and there is a magnetic sensor on the steering column to do the reset.
Clever setup!!
Thanks.
One issue that has been brought up is lane changes. I don't think there will be enough steering wheel movement to cancel as it currently setup. I've got to take some time to draw out the entire circuit instead of working it out in my head. I may be able to use the other terminals of the toggle to do this. The switch is a DPDT of which I'm only using one side.
Here are the two circuits I used to make the controller. I did a couple of extra relays to keep the two channels from interferring with each other. The initial circuit would allow you to have one side blinking then be able to activate the other. I also added a relay to keep the reset from resetting unless the circuit was active.

This is the latch. I have two sets in this.

You can see how the size of all the relays would quickly grow.

Reminds me of the movie "A flash of genius".
Nice application of knowledge.

Having a roadster using the donor setup and going thru the same problems is the very reason I developed my self cancelling turn signal system, oh and it works in the coupe too! :-)
Tim, actually I love seeing this stuff, nice job.

I just put a noise maker in the flasher circuit. Cant miss that thing beeping.
Only cost about $3.

Hello everyone, I recently replaced the granddaughter's headlight/ combo switch in a 2000 Dodge Stratus and was intrigued at using such a switch in my Mk II roadster. This combo switch contained headlight controls (off, park, on and dimmer) plus cruise controls on left side and wiper controls (on, intermittent and washer) on the right side. The whole switch assembly with wiring plug ins measured about 2 inches deep and mounted with two screws. It used a simple cancel system with a small tang mounted to bottom side of steering wheel.
It would require a longer steering shaft, a mounting bracket from the dash and a cover that looked appropriate. This would greatly clean up the dash of extra switches, add modern convenience and cure that dumb feeling I get at the moment of my zenith when I realize that guy is waving at me because I haven't turned off my T/S. Has anybody else researched this idea and which switches have they explored for this application.
Happy Happy, Doutie

Look up the clever turn signal. It is a solid state turn signal controller which uses inertia to cancel the turn signal.
