I'm switching to under car exhaust, and I'm looking for feedback on muffler selection. I've read all the threads, but hoping that those that run this setup can share their experiences, what did you run, how did you like it, would you use them again, etc.

So far I'm looking at the Spintech cruiser series, or the stainless speciality mufflers.

I've got Ford racing ceramic shorties on the way. Mike Forte suggested 2 or 2 1/4 pipe, which I'll go with, most likely all stainless to cope with the salt air down here.

So, do what you guys do best and help me spend money.

Thanks

John

I can't help much except to add a thought. Try to incorporate a crossover pipe somewhere in the system. At every autocross I am jealous of the exhaust sound from the Mustangs and Corvettes and I think a crossover is a big part of that.

I thought about a crossover or x pipe, but I'm following the Whitby's routing and not notching or cutting the frame, so I don't know if I can fit one in.

I made my under car exhaust system using Spintech oval pipe and their low profile mufflers (2.25" tall). I had no experience welding stainless so went with the aluminized steel units. I painted most of the system with VHT flat black exhaust paint and then coated it with VHT clear. The rear pipes I had ceramic coated satin black. I wrapped most of the pipe under the car which had worked out great. The small mufflers fit exactly in the seat pans.

It was a lot of work and not exactly cheap..........about the same as a nice side exhaust system but the sound is perfect (using 2.5" pipes with my 410W engine). Since I built my MKIV as a "street" version with no scoop or roll bar and street dash with glove box, the under car pipes were the right choice.

I posted quite a few pics as I worked on the system...........just do a forum search.

Thanks Ron,

I did read your threads on the install, excellent work. I'm stealing some of your ideas, as I did
John O's. My biggest difference is the route around the rear. Since I have IRS, I'm staying under as Whitby's does. As you said, the mufflers aren't cheep, and I'm planning stainless due to the salt air here, so I was hoping to here from guys who have had the mufflers for a while, how they like them, etc.

John O did PM me that he was very happy with them which was good to hear.

Hi guys,

I'm working on my exhaust project. I've mocked up the runs from both headers. Other than moving some wiring, everything clears and looks ok. I think I'm ok on clearance, as it is set up now I'm about 5/8 inch below the main tubes.

I'm still working out a couple of things:

First, to wrap or not wrap the pipes under the foot boxes. I'm using 2.25 inch stainless pipe and stainless spintech mufflers, so I want this to last. I've read horror stories of the wrap rotting out the pipe prematurely. I know Ron had good luck with it, just thinking long term. Any thoughts?

Second, I'm seeking a good insulation/heat barrier that I can put on the exterior of the bottom of the footboxes. Obviously need something that is thin and can handle near contact with the pipes.

Thanks for the help.

John
