View Full Version : new exhaust project

I started to replace the exhaust in the fall, and put it aside due to weather and work. Started up again this week.

My original exhaust is rusting through the ceramic coating - was expensive and obviously not good workmanship. New system will be polished stainless steel, and is larger diameter.

The original:

First mockup. I will be putting in a spacer to move the top further back to match the bottom. I can move this one to the other side so nothing wasted.

One issue will be clearance to the body, both beneath the door and at the headers. What do you guys consider minimum clearance.

Hi Mike

I think your set up looks great but I can't answer your question about the clearance. Are you still using the same style of clamps between the headers and the pipes or are you modifying them to flanges?

My immediate goal is to get the car on the road but alternative pipes are on my list of upgrades.

Mine are about 1" at top and rear.

Those look like a real improvement over the FFR supplied mufflers ... and they look great as well.

Hi Mike
I have done many coupe side pipes with these exact parts.
You will need to maintain at least 1/2 inch between muffler and the body
and 3/8 inch around the opening where the pipes come through the body.
expect at least a 40hp gain at the tires due to this mod.
Also
If you are using a mig welder with stainless wire make sure you cover the pipes with a welding blanket, or leather.
welding splatter sticks to the stainless much better than steel. so run the blanket up to the point you are welding.
If you are tig welding then never mind as there is no splatter.
if you have any question feel free to contact me.
also do not weld the 2 pipes to each other before polishing.

Good luck
what you have done looks great.

Hi, guys, thanks for replying

1/2" and 3/8" I think I can do without too much work. Might have to slightly bend the headers to get the aim right.

Marc, in the last two photos, you can see an "enlarger" that will slip over the headers and mate to the larger pipes. My plan is to use the same headers this year, and maybe go to larger custom headers next summer. I'm thinking we should go the London Ohio cobra show, if you're up for a road trip?

Mark D, thanks the work so far has pretty much exactly been as you did for Chris' build. Appreciate your comments about polishing and welding. If I get 40hp from this, it will be so much worth it!!

I'd also like to add a cross-over, but I'm getting some pushback from my welder that it will be a lot of extra work.
