View Full Version : Ultima Kit Car build

Rscocca

Well the madness has begun again. I have always wanted to build another kit car that had the appearance of a Daytona prototype style body.
I compared the various companies out there that supply such a kit and decided to go with an Ultima GTR.
On January 8th, 2014 I ordered an Ultima from Ultima sports, UK.
I should take about 12-16 weeks for it to arrive in Port.

Car will be powered by an LS -7
Trans G50 Porsche
Leather interior
Sat Nav/radio
AC.

How do you plan to use the car when finished? This looks like a great project.

Hi Doug,
Car will be used as daily driver from roughly April thru September (or longer, weather permitting), Car shows and maybe a track event once in a while.

Very nice, how will it be registered ? NY had alot of issues with the coupe I was going to build

I like this car too, very impressive performance, but very costly. I did see it on the REAL Top Gear show. I would use an after market block like a DART if money was no object.
I hear the roller is over $ 90 ??, but if you are to compare what you get in the end, I would say money well spent, but be careful as hell, that thing flies.
the most impressive is it's track handling and giant tires
A ferrari could cost double and then the depreciation sets in, I think the Ultima would hold value to the right buyer

Bil1024-- I have spoken to a few Ultima owners in NY, and they said as long as you follow the process I should have no problems.
I am waiting for Albany to get back to me at this time.

The Italian-- Don't believe everything you hear-- Complete kit with all upgrade option and G50 trans (clutch and adaptors included) comes in under 75k.

The Itialian-- I tried to edit above post but no joy,

With the engine it will come in at just about 90k. It should be a fun build either way.

I just spoke with DMV-- As long as lights are DOT no issue to look out for.

got the new garage area all set up and ready to go.
Learned a lot form the MK 3.1 build, should make this build a little easier, I hope.

Now that I see your close up images of the chassis, it seems the GTR chassis is much more stiffer/safer than the can am. That can am would be awesome here in calif with the top option. If they could just double cage the can am, I wouldn't mind the "Trans-am" T top thingy.

Getting close, I'd love to build one of these one day.

I hear the bodies are in show ready shape, a quick polish and you are good to go... that's awesome. Wheels and all, that's truly a complete kit.

I think we met at the open house last summer... and spoke about getting caught with the roadster in the rain.

Congrads Bob !
I have been talking with Ted and since I have a "thing" for the Can Am, but love the full cage of the GTR, they said they would accommodate me if I so choose. Seems the soft top will fit IF they do the double roll cage on the CAN AM frame, but with the forward braces instead of your rearward braces that fit under the rear clam. Kinda cool custom for me. They actually took measurements and let me know, nice guys. I figure I can get the stiffer frame this way with the CAN AM body. It's sunny Calif thingy- No rain, no snow and I can jump out if there's an earthquake! or jump in depending on the circumstances.
Oh, get a MAC, it's easier.

Here is a pic that should bring back a twitch in some.
29769
Been a little busy,
I got the interior panels riveted in place and sealed to the chassis.

2977029771

Next step is to flip the chassis to rivet in the floor pans.

Rscocca
06-08-2014, 08:06 AM
Flipped the chassis upside down on Friday to rivet all the bottom panels in place.

29898

Laid out the panels starting from the front edge, put all my little Indians in a row,

29899

then knocked them down.

29900

There are a lot of rivets.
All total about 7-8 hours into the project already

Rscocca
06-08-2014, 08:09 AM
Next I coated the bottom with Armortec bed liner to protect from stones and help a little with noise.
29901
Felt like a shame to cover up all the rivet lines since they cam out so nice.

Next is to flip it back over and start with steering system.

Rscocca
06-10-2014, 08:37 AM
Flipped chassis back over yesterday and continued riveting.
29955

Installed rack and Pedal assembly.

29956

29957

Today front suspension, steering system.

Got a lot done in the last few days,
installed front brakes, These things are huge,

30177

Installed rear brakes and parking brakes, Special note-- make sure the large hole is facing up on the parking brake bracket.

30178

Laid out the wiring harness,

You said that you had (assuming) Cal motorsports tricked you transmission , which box did you choose ? I remember something about a G50.
and what did you do to it?
Reason why you did not go G96/50 ??
Thanks
Mike

Rscocca
06-22-2014, 05:45 PM
Went with G50/52 after a small problem with G50/02 box that was orignally sent by Ultima,(They did the right thing in refunding cost).

California Motorsports had a G50/52 box that had just come in and was available.
Upgrades included new stronger side covers, provisions for oil cooler and spray bar, LSD, conversion to cable shift.

All the adapters for the LS7 sent with the car would not work with the G96/50. I'm sure they do make them.

Yes he is hauling a$$

The second caliper is the emergency brake.

It is a Brembo E brake
It looks to me like an incredible build, gonna be very fast and reliable.

Reply to below;

Yes, I would not try at 230MPH either, but you gotta love that 0 to 60 and that blistering 0 to 100
I've been watching several videos and even though the car has a not so great weight distribution sitting still, it makes that all up in the design when downforce is applied at speed- it is a true can am car and that is why it is so dam fast around corners, more like a Hoover Vac.
So even though a car can have a 50/50 distribution, that all changes when pushing through the wind, you are also buying a lot of R&D with the Ultima-this also explains the smooth ride other race cars don't share.
This also explains why McLaren used the Ultima's as a model for their cars, but they don't talk about that

Correct Brembo Parking brake.
I have always built a little over kill into a car for reliability. As far as how fast ????? who knows, gearing puts it at 230 but I don't have the stones or long enough straight road to try.

The T/C sensor is on the front , not the drive wheels ??

The sensors are on all four wheels, as long as both fronts are the same count side to side and both rears are the same count side to side. you can run different sensor rings.
Rear sensors will count from two rings mounted to the transaxle.

Had to find a convenient way to hide three sat antenna (Radio, Navigation and Speedo)
Luckily Ford aftermarket came to the rescue.
For the mustangs they have this.

I removed the antenna from there original plastic bases and mounted them inside this cover.

I then set about mounting the body for the last time, not too bad only had it off tree times.
Finished the firewall with al the extra stuff, Oil tank, Expansion tank, swirl tank for coolant, ac evaporator.

very close to dropping engine in, just need to neaten up a few things that will not be easily gotten to once engine is in..

Great progress and quality of build so far congrats on that. Where in the world did that intake box come from, that is realy nice not seen it before.

I've been wanting to build an Ultima for somewhere near 13 years now and this summer I may start but been eyeing the SL-C as well, somehow part of me likes the Ultima better. Many folks are not a fan of the front end, but I did see this guys front end and the head change altered the character of the car, look more contemporary, not sure if you saw it, I linked the build below.

The white is White Lightning from Swain Coatings, It lowers under hood temps significantly.
I used it on the Roadster and you can grab side pipes with in three minutes of turning off car.

I'm going to Gold foil the lower half of the air box as well to control air temps.

GM Crate LS7 and controller kit ecu and throttle pedal, wiring harness from American speed (longer length), GM's harness was way too short, based on front engine car.
Factory Exhaust with Swane white lightning coating. Much thicker then most coatings and really keeps the temps down under hood. I used it on my cobra.

I reversed intake used fast 102 intake with Nick Williams 102dbw tb.

Ok that makes sense, makes it easier for me to visualize how it all pulgs toghether. So A.S. does sell a harness kit stand alone then thats good to hear. I was wondering about that, wondered if they sold thier harness and engine assessory kit stand alone, I assume accessory kit for alternator and AC too.

Just checked out that intake and TB, that is nice parts. Your gonna throw up a big number on the dyno and I bet the response will be telepathic.

Well, Its ALIVE.

Had a hard time as a 5th grader must have made the engine harness (five wires in wrong locations of the ECU plug)
3 hours of pin by pin and it finally started.
I had a tuner down south reprogram ECU for all the modifications and it purrs.

What kind of steering wheel/electronics are you running there? Is the display in the center lcd?

Rscocca

Steering wheel is an AIM GT 320 Wheel.
LCD display for almost all engine parameters, Speedo, tach, laptimes etc.

The Italian-- all self contained in wheel with one data link that plugs into OBDII port.
You program shift lights with laptop. Directionals, I used a motorcycle directional box that is all low current.
Horns are built into grips of wheel.

John-- Sounds like a plan once I get past DMV, sending paper work next two weeks hopefully.

Hi Pete,
The car is not on the road yet, I'm about to install windshield then submit paper work to DMV.
Should be a couple of weeks after that.
Just in time for the better weather.

Been too busy shoveling and digging out up here.
I'll post more pics when I have the chance.

Wow 9953 views. Hopefully it lives up to the Hype.
All in all it has been an uneventful build. Only hic cups were self made mistakes.
Factory support is top shelf, emails are answered overnight and if you call a human answers.
All paper work for NY DMV will be going out next week, hopefully I will have a short wait for Auto crime inspection and they should issue VIN during inspection.
Next day go to DMV and start driving.

I just a matter of the body lines, I was looking for something that resembles a Daytona Prototype that was street legal.
Don't get me wrong the GTM is a great looking car.

Past visual inspection for DMV, that's the easy part, just send them four photos. Next is the more stressful part (auto crime inspection).
Once Auto crime finishes their inspection, they issue the VIN right there.
Next day I can register this beast.

Yess Rscocca, people are picky, but that beast you have now finished looks amazing... just curious why you swapped out all the digital guages for the blue dial ones?

Rscocca
06-15-2015, 07:28 AM
Ultimately did not like the way the digital blues looked. Plus had a hard time getting tach calibrated and seemed like a lot of lag when I reved engine for tach to catch up.

New gauges are Speedhut, everything works as they should.

Unfortunaly only able to put about 100 miles on it before I damaged the nose.
Backing car off trailer and a D ring flipped up and caught the nose. Been about a month since then and body shop is having a real hard time matching paint. Need British standard Oxford blue. Only maker is this paint is Praragon in England and they cannot ship to US do to EPA rules.

BUT, those first 100 miles were a lot of fun. Car is not a heavy as one would think for the steering or braking. No PS or PB but is stops real fast and turns are crisp.

You really have to learn to control the right pedal and clutch when accelerating it will spin the tires real quick if you don't pay attention.

Good news is the body shop may have a match (just got a call) a minute ago.

We'll see in a day or two.

I just got back from a day of spirited driving at NJMP in Miller NJ. we were on the Lightning course all day, car handled like a dream.
Here is a link to the video of the last run of the day, one instructor said that if I didn't have a g meter on camera you would think the car was barely moving.
